Hi all what is ths thinnest gass less wire you can get ? Think i must be blind as can only find .8 / .9 but sure read some where you can get .5 / .6 any idears,, john
Hi John, I don't use the stuff myself but I thought 0.8 was the smallest - presumably there is a limit to how thin they can make it and still get a core of flux into it?

Yep 0.8 is about as small as it gets. Quite hard to weld thin stuff with it (you can do it with the thin metal technique as detailed in the tutorials, with the addition of having to wire brush the metal as you get close to another weld spot).
To be honest if you're doing anything more than a couple of inches of work, get some gas.
Yep, my vote goes for gas as well - I don't even have the option to reverse polarity any more. Only pitfall is for outside work when it is windy.

What are you welding outside that needs real thin gasless wire? As mentioned above, 0.8mm is about as small as it gets. This stuff in the URL below is the thinnest I have been able to obtain: 0.76mm; it's a bit expensive and very good.
and set as soft an arc as you can - do plenty practice on thin stuff first before welding something like a car. Best of luck with it, I only do thin stuff outside with gasless when there's no alternative...
