gasless with sheilding gas..

Just put a roll if gasless back in my mig as my mig isnt great with solid wire, but have some co2 gas left so i tried it out.. What a difference! Firstly the nasty smoke that normally stops you from seeing is virtually not there, also the puddle looks wetter pretty much like a solid wire puddle, and you can push or pull the torch without trapping the slag. The slag just flakes off when done. This was done with cheap Sip wire. Will post a couple of pictures later on. Now, is this big improvement due to the fact that the atmosphere cant get to the flux to cause a reaction?

You're probably thinking about 'dual-shield' rather than gasless wire, that's often used for heavy stuff.

The first picture was with CO2 the second was just the wire. All in all, my MIG runs happier with gasless wire, as I understand using solid wire requires a few more amps to melt the wire than a hollow flux core wire. I've has to resolder the board about 3 times for what i'm guessing is from current overload, as the transformer hums louder with solid wire than with gasless.

I think the video on youtube is the Nitesttsu cored wire demonstration with the vertical up plate welding? I've seen it and envy his steady hands!

No, the powercraft MIG I have had for ages, The lincoln is superb!

Flux cored and metal cored wires are totally different to gasless type wires, they are commonly used for either high deposition or high quality welding

Metal cored wires I believe are the MIG's version of the old 7024 electrodes which had a mega thick coating with added iron powder for high efficiency.

What I can't understand is how can hollowing out a wire and adding something which would be of equal volume inside the wire create so much more efficiency? Does it work on the similar principle of expanding cavity foam?
