Gasket material

Just wondered as to what tends to be the preferred thickness's and types of gasket which people tend to keep to hand for use in general applications? This is obviously excluding the cases where a specific thickness and type of gasket needs be used for a particular application.

i just bought a 'selection pack' of vaious thickness that i keep handy, if not just resort to cereal boxes, tend to work well enough

- I thought I was the only one using cereal boxes, I've been laughed at countless times for even suggesting it. Obviously has it's limitations and might be less inclined to use it on anything expensive but has served me very well on small outboard / mower / rotorvator / stimmer engines etc for years.

I've used cardboard or cereal boxes when I can't get a proper gasket for year's, never had a problem with it. Always use some Hylomar ar similar with it as well just in case.

I once bought some carburettor gaskets which were useless so I used the cardboard closure on the packet instead.

Don't eat Cereals in our house so, Pizza boxes (not takeout type) are my preferred material. Coated in grease prior to use so it soaks in, they work very well

Klinger 4400 or other similar klinger materials, you will even find ones to make header gaskets that won't ever leak. Look up Klinger they probably have a web site.
If you find a gasket makers they will have boxes[or skips] full of scrap.
The scrap may well be big enough to cut stuff as big as sump gaskets out
of, I made my Cosworth sump and rocker cover gaskets from 4400.
If you have to buy it and don't want to pawn a kidney, Klinger Statite is the basic sort of gasket paper and it's cheap.

Anathing with the Klingersill name on it costa a fortune, £130 a 1.5 x 2.5 M sheet of 0.5mm

I have used biscuit tins, leather boot tongues, and of course Cornflake boxes

yeah always use cornflake boxes not rice crispy boxes as they tend to snap crackle and pop

Cheers chaps. Didn't realise anyone still used the cereal box/cardboard trick. Good to know it doesn't automatically put one on the bodger list, doing that.

Those mixed packs. Are those the ones where you get several or more A4 size sheets of 0.4mm, 0.8mm, 1mm? etc. in one pack?

Finally realised what it is which standard gasket paper reminds me of, so done my first piece with the stuff today to see how it fares. Got our Gert to pick me up some greaseproof paper whilst she was out and about the other day.

Can Jute string in its pure state be used as gland packing? Been looking around, and it seems Hemp and Jute are common components of gland seals, but not sure if it's feasible to use it as is? Just trying to figure out what I can use or try as the gland seals on these suds pump shafts.
