I think he was poking at it with a steel rod to gauge the temperature then weld with an ali rod which I'm guessing he was dipping in flux off camera.

There was a pot of flux in shot that he was using.

It looks like the Arc rod is being used to clean the aluminium and then an Ali brazing rod is melted onto the piston. Amazing repair though.

No, that's an arc rod being used to even out the broken surface and probably to remove any slag. He then builds up with a thin ally rod and flux.

Well I was a bit disappointed he used proper tooling on the lathe, when hacksaw blades taped together would have worked much quicker

Even the lathe tools were carbide tips welded on to steel shanks .
There are loads of vids of similar repairs , amazing to watch

it was common to use a pointed tool to agitate the pool and get good penetration into the casting plus rake off the slag boiled up to the top of the pool a minimun amount of flux is used with this method on thick sections its possible to weld without flux by this method the tool constantly breaking the oxide layer
if youve ever welded old repairs with too much flux used the metal is full of wormholes and flux residue which must be dug out

this was an everyday thing in the veteran / vintage motoring days when the local blacksmith was mr fixit

its great for badly corroded stuff that you would say was scrap normaly

Strangely compelling watching these guys who do a lot with very limited resource. What I admire most is the ability to squat whilst working, often for long periods. If I try that I either get stuck are end up on me a*se.
