Mig wire is just that a wire and requires gas, Usually a mix of Argon / CO2 to shield it.
In Gas-less the wire has a flux incorporated in the wire this is good outdoors where the wind can blow the gas shield away.
People use gas-less also if they don't do a lot of welding / don't want the expense of buying, hiring gas bottles.
Also in the main the machine is a simpler unit so cost is less, it usually produces more spatter so clean up is required.
Gas-less is not really correct because as you burn the "gas-Less"wire the flux produces gas to shield the weld

this is what ive found out
whilst you can weld with both gas and gasless its easier with gas as its cooler than using gasless you can still burn a hole in the steel with either
gasless is hot and apears really bright compared to gasless
the main difference between them both is one uses the gas to keep oxygen away from the weld whilst the other uses a mix like on arc welding rods that pings off or you need to use a wire brush to clean off afterwards

I assume your looking at buying a welder.
Gasless machines are normally cheaper, they cut a few parts out to save cost but generally will be lower quality. They can be converted to gas use by wiring in a gas solenoid and replacing/modifying the torch.
The other difference is weldong polarity is usually swapped for flux core use - better machines its easy to do, less easy on cheap machines.
What are you intending to weld? I'd suggest a stick welder with 1.6mm rods for the thin stuff, if you dont want to use gas.

If you've ever tried to carry a large bottle of argoshield up a narrow staircase on to a 4th floor roof terrace whilst the client tells you to mind the paintwork, you tend to look very favourably on gasless mig.
It's not pretty and does make a lot of spatter - swings and roundabouts.
