Gas torch - small pencil type

I'm after a smallish pencil type gas torch - something smaller than a plumber's blow lamp, but bigger than a chaiwanese ebay-special £1.50-lasts-three-seconds-between-refills type.

can anyone recommend something?

maybe something on a pipe from a disposable gas cartridge? or even a refillable calor bottle?
It seems I might have an ongoing line in handmade metal flowers after my mini-success with the copper rose I made - a florist friend of mine wants a regular supply
and I can't keep trying to solder them on the gas stove

I have a clarke electric 60W solder gun, but that doesn't throw out enough heat,or have a long enough duty cycle

and no - I can't afford a TIG

I use a little pencil torch made by CFH, works very well, check their line of products.

I have one and it's been very useful for lead welding. Runs on either mapp or propane. Pricey though

I have one and it's been very useful for lead welding. Runs on either mapp or propane. Pricey though

+1 for this. Use one in work for various small heating jobs and its quite good

will this sort of thing be hot enough for brazing, rather than just soft soldering?

It will be plenty hot enough if run on propane. Propane is the standard in general eng shops for brazing/ soldering work. The main thing to consider is the mass of the job in hand the bigger the mass and heat absorption then the more heat is needed to saturate the job to get the joint area up to temp, this will come down to the size of nozzle you intend to use, points worth considering.


If you go for a torch with neck with can take various sizes of nozzle you wont go far wrong. This style will also be a tool that will last you for life if you buy a decent quality and will give you all the versatility you will ever need for general /light / home use.

If you still find these are to big for what you need try searches for jewelery making/ brazing/ soldering. There is some very fine specialised brazing equip available for this sort of work. These also go into actual gas refinement equipt to get the exact temp required. This is all a bit advanced though.

Just thinking after writing that post, what exactly is it you are trying to do? If you are thinking of brazing as in oxy acetlyne type brazing then its the wrong thing. A bit of confusion can occur here as brazing in engineering, jewelry, brass, work etc etc is also interpreted as the same thing as silver soldering, so a bit of clarification may be a good idea.

i have a rothenberger quickfire torch. verry nice used on disposable bottles or primus 2000 bottles i also have sievert torches .that would be your best bet the one on ebay ergenomicaly friendly handle and lightweight and u can get the full set of diffrent size burners for the torch

Hi, sorry to drag up an old thread! Does anyone have any experience of the Primus Needleflame mentioned above. Would the flame be small/hot enough for lead burning. I've seen it advertised as suitable for lead welding but wanted to check before making the purchase...

Made 20 lead roof light surrounds with O|A & No 2 jet set it up with a soft flame clean led is the secret I used killed nitric as flux
Not the recomended way but worked for me

I did contemplate oxy, though having not used my oxy/acetylene gear for at least 15 years, last time i looked the hoses were in need of replacement and it's not really a viable option hiring the cylinders for what could be a one off job. I toyed with the idea of getting the tig torch for my inverter but even thats quite involved to get it up and running. Seems to leave me with the Primus needleflame, the rothenberger microfire mentioned above, from what i can see is no longer available or the castolin sets with very un-economical dispossable cylinders...

For anyone that might be interested, i took a punt with the Primus needleflame for this small lead welding job i had. I hunted high and low for a bit of feedback on the internet to no avail so it was a bit of a gamble. The Needleflame worked a treat, i had a fair bit of practice on scrap lead before welding the fancy lead nosing i had formed but all in all was very happy with the end result. Clean lead was the key and clean 5mm lead strips for the filler rod. Would definitely recommend it...
