Gas suppliers

When I last had a MIG welder I used disposable bottles. I welded up my crappy car and realised I'd spent more on these than the rusty heap was worth.

I'm looking into maybe getting another MIG welder, but want to run on proper bottles this time. What do you pay for them and who supplies them?

I use Air Products Argon CO2 mix from Fowlmere Welding & Engineering supplies.

I chose them because they charge rental for the cylinder by the day (22p) so no need to be charged three months or a year.

They (the agents at Fowlmere) were also friendly and more helpful than the other main supplier in my area.

Refills are £28 for their smallest size, £29 for the half-size bottle (sorry - I dont know the correct names) or £20 for the 5 ft tall bottles because they buy a lot more of them and they are refilled automatically / more easily.

I considered disposables and the tiniest sealey-refill things but I recon they would have been far too much hassle and expensive. Setting up the account was simple and there seem to be no tie-ins with AP. Hope that helps

Yes Fowlmere near Royston. Down a lane opposite the church - you wouldn't think so, but you can't miss them.

They were really helpful with the gas and metal but their stock of tools is not vast - if its Kit you want try PM to Weldequip on here, he's very patient and competetively priced...

It is just the gas i need. BOC are about 2 miles from my house but i think they may be a bit expensive so a trip to Fowlmere is on the cards.

Oddly enough Fowlmere is my nearest supplier too. Have been chatting to Arran about a MIG welder. I really wanted to get some idea of what is out there in terms of professional supplies and different prices for gas contracts.

Pub Bottle

If you know anyone in the pub trade you can use a co2 pub bottle. Not as good as an argon mix but used by many people. You can get a Co2 regulator or adaptor if you have an argon regulator.

Been there done that, didn't like the welds. I'm doing motorcycle frames now and I'm a bit picky as to what I use on them as there is some areas with fairly high stresses. With a stick set I use low hydrogen rods.
