gas strut force question

Ive got one of these -

The lid is held up by a couple of gas struts, which i need to replace.


SGS have one the exact size in non-adjustable spec - so i need to order to a specific force. I have zero idea what force to order.


Can anyone give me a guestimate?

The "lid" of the unit is a hoop of thin wall box section and a neoprene sheet (the black bit). It weights somthing, but not very much at all - im currently propping it open with a bit of wood that rests on the glass top, which i have no fear about, so we are not talking as much as a car boot door.



Again, im only really looking for a guestimate, although if someone wants to get all "maths" on it, im sure i could take some measurements! : )

Thank you. Id previously contacted natgraph, and they had told me it was a no longer stocked part, so i cant just use one of theirs, however, the data you have given me (which id not seen, or not remembered seeing) tells me exactly what im after with regards to force range.

We just bought 2 for the Fendt tractor bonnet, we buy a fair few door opener ones every year
They usually have the speck on them in light grey print.
Mod 0 =135N
Pressure is 180N for mod 1,2 2a.
340N for mod3
That's how I read the speck on the picture you put up the 340N seems high unless the lid is very heavy, but the leverage has to be taken into account.
Send one to SGS they will advise, I was told they can increase pressure but not release/ lower
Cant remember how the part No works ,the ends screw on you can save if they are not worn
They are very helpful, nice Co to deal with we have found

Take the existing struts off the lid, then with some spring scales measure the weight of the lid, that is, how much effirt is required to lift the lid from closed….Scales should register an amount in kg….
the Force is then the product of that kg figure multiplied by by G…(9.81m/s/s )…So if it takes 5kg pull to lift the lid then, the force is 50 N….

If you select a strut whose N figure is above your calculated, you can release some of the Nitrogen in the strut body( be careful not to overdo it…) so that the lid will raise and stay put but will close without too much effort….

Did this when I added a strut system to my mini mill….used SGS for the strut, very helpful.

Quite often the force is printed onto the body. Failing that you could calculate it and I’d be very surprised if there isnt a free calculator online somewhere…

All the industrial gas spring companies will have a diagram or several to allow you to work out what you need.

One of them didn't got far for their name either - Industrial Gas Spring . . .

Have a look at the strut photo and read the description.
You have to work out the arm to the mounting point the strut diagrams will be strait push

Take the strut of, lift the lid with a spring balance at the point it attaches the strut attaches

They are the ones that dug a hole in the carpark and methane came out. Located in Peckham, I think.

I ordered one the right physical size in the force range that Bullet supplied data for prior. It should be delivered tomorrow.

Its not exactly a precision application, so, with luck, it will be more or less right, and hold the lid up without my block of wood!
