Hi, I'm new to MIG welding and have got hold of a Wolf 135 Turbo Mig Machine with a dodgy gun. I've bought a good quality universal replacement gun, but found that there was no gas valve in the torch like the original. I've now bought a gas solenoid valve and installed it 'mechanically' into the machine. The coil on the solenoid valve is marked as 48v AC. Now here is the problem, where do I get 48v AC from in this machine? Will this coil also work on 24v DC?. I do not have any fitting instructions for the solenoid valve or wiring diagram for the MIG welder itself, does anyone know where I can get these from? Great forum by the way........

There are a couple of threads on here about converting to euro type torchs and problems with gas solenoids. Where did you get the figure 24v dc from? is that the power across the torch?

I got my velve from somewhere else, hence 48v AC figure. I just took it that that meant 48v AC or 24v DC as the above suggests

Think you might have to do a little electrical testing. The original torch had a solonoid valve in, what voltage is there across the trigger. It is possible that you can run a wire from trigger switch or more correctly from the power feed of the trigger switch. ie place the solonoid in the same circuit loop as the trigger, which would have been the same way it would have been done in the trigger. The only thing that bothers me is because the solonoid is now farther away from the tip if you will get any pre gas flow before welding. I must admit im no expert on this and there are others here far more qualified, but if you have a multi meter check the voltage across the switch. But be very careful it will have to be live when you do it, so only do it if you feel competant.

You will not find 48V ac in that machine you cant go from the feed motor because the voltage will vary , I have done one it took me ages I think I came of the rectifier press the trigger and measure the voltage input to the rectifier I cant remember but I think its 24V
The image shows a Migmate, the feed for the valve would be taken from the rectifier input, use the 2 bolted connections on the left, the SIP Migmate 170 and Topmig 170,195 are connected that way.
This would work for most small Migs with a single plate/full wave rectifier, however it would not work for those with a bridge rectifier as the input would be around 24V ac and not 48V ac (2*24V).
You will need to check the type of rectifier in the welder, if there is a diagram in the user manual a full wave would be shown as 2 diodes and bridge 4.
