Gas regulator

Hi all

what should I have my gas regulator set to please?

Ive been using it at anything from about 6-10 is this about right?

10 LPM is standard. You can get away with 6LPM if the conditions are ideal.

The other thing I forgot to mention is I do a lot of my welding outside so I guess I should be using even more than that, maybe?

I find some sort of barrier to protect against the wind is useful aswell as upping the gas flow when outside, sheet of plyboard/chipboard/mdf anything solid gets my vote, bed sheets or similiar i found can blow all over the shop even when pegged down well.

If you have an normal Argon reg with the low pressure gauge calibrated in litres per minute then don't believe it!

Its actually the pressure set by the regulator so it is really only showing psi.

The actual flow from the nozzle is dependant on the length of your hose, hose diameter, and torch nozzles etc etc.

You need a "pea-shooter" type flow gauge that measures the actual flow at the work-piece.

If you have the expensive BOC preset single stage reg with a flow-meter then maybe you can believe the reg - but for about a tenner get a pea-shooter

The flow should be close as the gague is calibrated for the orifice installed in the regulator. Usually something like 0.029".

That will be far more restrictive than the hose length, hose diameter and nozzle size.

Mine had 30' of hose and a 25' torch and still measured right.

Now, cheap Chinese regs would probably never have been calibrated.
