Dry ice used to be commonly used for theatrical effect, before smoke machines became popular. It still is where a floor level mist is required. You'd just keep the dry ice in a container and pour boiling water on it.Just like popping a lump into an unsuspecting workmates cuppa W/A, as you say. Hey presto - spooky atmosphere!
Carbon dioxide exists in solid or gas forms at atmospheric pressure, but at higher pressures it can be liquid (co2 bottle/extinguisher etc). It boils off at -78.5 degrees C (just got that from 'how stuff works' - i'd never have known)
I remember it being used in discos in the '70s. Havn't seen it in theatre for years.
