Gas Lenses

I've finally started TIG welding after 35 years of Arc, Oxy and MIG experience.

A number of sources have said that use of a gas lens in the torch will give better gas cover, reduce gas consumption and allow longer electrode stick-out - so my question is, why would you NOT use a gas lens all the time if they are so good?

Because the process for the main is still industial, and cost plays a big part in consumables, where someone other than the welder is purchasing, and the buyer either doesn't care or doesn't know

as you get better, you'll find you can use a std one just as well.

A gas lens is bigger than a regular shroud so it is harder to use in tight places.
