Gas for the mig

Hi my trusted advisers,

I no this subject has been delt with before , but there seems to be a lot of different options on the market

I baught a second hand mig welder it came with a boc bottle of gas, (from e bay)
I have been using it, but the gas has almost run out, I understand I shouldnt have the bottle ?
What she'll i do ,
Wich is the best way to go for argon gas

if its a BOC bottle I understand you need to be careful how you dispose of it, and not return it to BOC.

I assume you're wanting a full sized cylinder, in which case you can either go rent free with the likes of adams gas and pay a one off charge for a cylinder (about £55 from memory) and then something like £35 for a cylinder refil.

another option would be to go to BOC and use their volkzone offer for light users, where you rent the cylinder, but the gas usage cost is lower than rent free, so if you use alot of gas it may be a better option.

lastly you can use CO2 from pub suppliers and this would be the cheapest option. I have been using this option for the last 15 years until recently changing to the volkzone offer.

CO2 isnt the best gas though,for sheet steel,argoshield light is 93% argon, 5% Carbon Dioxide and 2% Oxygen.

Im assuming you'll be welding steel

As above, my monthly BOC Argoshield bottle rental is less than £4 [£3.95 iirc, without checking]

Were would you sugest I get rid of the bottle
Couldn't I tell them I found it
Would they try and charge me ?

nothing wrong with taking the bottle in and handing it back to them.
you found it etc.

i did that last year, infact it was a neighbour who had the account
and gave me the bottle to take back to BOC as he didn't drive.
when he was being evicted.

You can also telephone them and next time they are in area will collect, I did same with an air products cylinder I had obtained,
I then had a hobbyweld cylinder but have found it far to expensive so have just changed to a rental from boc, as above less than £4 per month and get 4x the gas of hobbyweld for slightly less money
