Gas cylinders Propane

My mate live miles from 'anywhere' in wales in a caravan,which is behind a10ft hedge and about 60ft from the road, the other day his Mrs was at home when an estate car pulls off the road into the drive of the house where the caravan is parked and the guy jumped out n shot over to two 47 kg propanes that where JUST visable from the road, we had removed the valves from them and fitted bsp connectors and taps to them,to couple them together with copper pipe and had put a tee piece with two PCL air line fittings, we where using them to increase the capacity of my compressor to do some shot blasting, anyway he checked the serial numbers etc etc . His Mrs went out to ask the guy what he was doing he replied he was checking the cylinders and if they belonged to the company he worked for he would have confiscated them, he was possibly checking their CALORific value?
The point is we must be careful spending time making things with certain types of cylinders to possibly 'lose' them AND what we have made, at the drop of a hat.
Don't forget this was miles from 'anywhere' and well off the road ! he must have had eyes like an EAGLE, considering they where stood by a caravan, to see that they where not being used for their intended purpose!
So be carefull!!!!!

The cynic in me thinks it sounds more like he was eyeing up the cylinders to nick and quickly came up with the story after finding they no longer contained gas and was challenged. Full they are around £65 each so certain types of people who live in caravans, but move from place to place, don't have any quarms about helping themselves rather than paying for a refill.

No, he had his ID card with him!! he had been checking a house further down the road to give it its final safety cert for a new propane bulk tank instalation, before it was filled my mate knows the owner and checked that he had been there !

Most of them are brightly coloured The cylinders that is. so if he passed earler in the day he may have clocked them then.
Aslo thoes traveling people seame to leave there empties when they go forth (and multiply)

He did say he would have, the 'right' to impound them if they were his companies property. No matter what they had been made into.
Another mate has just used a 47 to make doors for a' fat lady' hand cranked fuel pump that he is renovating, the cast doors where missing when he bought it, even though he paid a lot for it, he was going to make them in fibreglass but when i looked at the top radius I said GAS CYL and with a few mods they have turned out perfect.
He renovates Morgans and has a picture of him filling up his morgan from a fat lady in the Isle of Mann in early 60's during tt week and has allways wanted one since. Will show some pics when he has finished as long as it has not been impounded !!

I think what he was doing is called trespassing, his id does not give him the right to enter private property. If he had parked in my drive I would have blocked him in and called the Police irrespective of who the cylinders belonged to.

He is full of $%^& If he wants to get them back unless the person willingly gives them to him he would need to go to court.

As an Example a bloke owes me 40 grand and I know where all his stock is and his petty cash but I still cant go and help myself.

Not only that I have to pay money to the courts to get what I am owed. (even then he can just close two of his 5 limited companies and leave me with court costs on top) The law in this country is a joke , so there is no way he could just walk of with them if challenged. Possession in 9 tenths of the law so if he already had them in his car unchallenged that might be a different issue.

Also you have to pay a "deposit" for Calor cylinders but virtually impossible to get that back if you return them. The deposit is more than their scrap value which is what happens to them if out of date or no longer fit for refilling due to damage or corrosion.

I totally agree with all thats been said above, all i can do is report what happened, thats why I was wondering re- the 'bonus'.
Along time ago before internet etc, in the workshop next to mine the guys had their mig outside welding one of their trucks, and the boc man arrived on the estate he came to me and asked about the mig but did'nt say who he was, I thought he just wanted some welding doing, I said OH no thats not mine its next doors, he said oh I'm from boc have YOU any cyl'sand if so can I see your lease agreement I said yes fine because I had 3 with boc oxy acet n argo he checked mine said thanks, and went off to next door and left there with the cyl off the mig in his car, they were well miffed because they had just swapped it and it was full! Also A few weeks later they got a bill for the years rental. The rep said to them if they would argue he would just call the police.
I have just spoken with my independant supplier who used to be calor and boc agent, who says the calor guy was probably an over jealous employee. and that he could not take them if they had gas in because that remains the property of the person but was not sure about, if the cyl where being used
for other 'purposes' . But he went on to say BOC were a totally different kettle of fish I know when I was with boc I borrowed my mates cyl because we had a big job on,when the job was finished I went to the boc stockist exchanged the two cyl and gave my mate back a full one, thought nothing of it, untill the next time we had the rental invoice there we where invoiced for two for the year !! I should have gone back the day after.

I personally would have told to GO AWAY in the nicest possible way...

Did she get his name Id get your mate to either ring the local office or pop down to the house down the road and ask for his contact details and register a formal complaint with his head office

Then id build a gate for the drive and get some camo netting to put over the bottles, out of sight out of mind

I know a dingly dell in the woods where the didies lob all their gas bottles, why they don't exchange them i don't know, probably can't do the maths ! but i told Calor and they were only interested in me bringing them all in to them FOR NOTHING, and then they say boo hoo were loosing all our bottles !

At some point they will have to sort out a way to pay for the return of all their strays, as they're loosing alot of money right now. New bottles are obviously not cheap.

The same goes for BOC, we cleared an industrial unit, a bankrupt welding operation, full of dozens of empty cylinders, BOC were not interested in paying anything for their return, and i don't do charity work ! We could have saved them a fortune.

I make gas bottle stoves ect and i have 25 sitting ready for the chop, i can't store anymore, iv'e seen half a dozen more lying about recently.

By the way "CALOR GAS" is only stamped on the valve end, i don't use this bit, so theres no come back.

Yes I agree with this also.
I did a diesel bmw engine a few years ago for a customer who had been no problem in the past, he had run out of oil and seized it, at the time there where not many s/h engines availlable so we explained that it might take a little time to complete the repair, also the block had a small crack to one of the head studs which I called him in to look at, I advised him that we would locktite it and he agreed. Anyway I repaired the engine fine but in the time it took,Which was about a month, the mot had run out so he said 'just do the mot', 2 tyres rear bushes and steering joints later the car is ready, no probs and was running fine. I was on a breakdown when he turned up, it was busy in the work shop office at the time with other owners picking up and needing cars going in and out and his was in the way he said to the wife 'Oh give us the keys and I'll move it for you' as i said he had been fine in the past, He moved it ok and never came back !! We got on to the police etc who said, its his not our prob. I was now owed a LOT of money.
Turns out he was going bankrupt and wanted somewhere to 'hide' the BMW which was reg'd to his wife !. He took it to another bmw specialist garage (that I know) and told them that I had repaired it and the block was CRACKED !!, and asked them to strip it so that he could complain to trading standards !! and get a new engine out of it!!
I had on my invoices parts belong to me untill paid for etc etc The point is I went to my sollicitor who said 'has the car left the garage' I said yes, he replied tuff, no matter what is on your invoice and no matter who was driving the car even if it was me, the parts now belong to the owner because they were fitted to the car !!!
So be carefull out there!

Funny that, his tyres ended up 'wearing out' whilst sitting at the other garage and I 'found' a spare key he must have dropped (just in case!) whos to say he hadnt 'authorised me to pick his car up for repair? as I had the key ?. But it did'nt come to that coz it was repo'ed

They did exactly the same to me, charged me for a year's rental after I got a refill on my BOC card for a bottle of oxy I was using. Before I swapped the bottle I explained that it wasn't mine, told them whose it was, told them exactly what I was doing and they said no, that's perfectly ok. End of the year I got a bill for a year's rental. Got it back as a credit.
