garden sheds

im after a new shed for my garden, the shed is a small size at 3foot wide and 6 foot long, went to local garden centres but none do one that narrow and what they do have is very expensive! I did a Google search and found a hand full of people selling just sheds, does anyone have any real world experiences from buying from online suppliers like this? It's the sort of item I want to see before I buy, don't want to end up with somthing flimsy which has rotted out in a few years!

Garden is long a narrow, at the moment I have a shanty town shack of a shed which haa been build over my oil tank, it's rotting and sticks of oil inside so need a narrow shed to go between tank and fence

I'll be honest, if you can make your own. We bought an expensive online one and its made of Kleenex... I'm making the next one properly!

Round here there are a couple of shed makers who will custom build a shed to your required size for not much more than a similar sized shed from Wickes or B&Q.
You might have similar near you?

I concur with "dan.taylor.1" that making it yourself is the best bet. It is easy enough and if you get the wood from a reclamation yard it would work out good value. The size you want to make is manageable. Once the side frame outriggers are made and you then add the shiplap or tongue and groove(recommended) you will be surprised how rigid they are. I would recommend trying to find thin steel corrugated sheets for the roof cover rather than felt. Good luck.

Decent well made sheds are expensive, in fact very expensive

If you can then making your own is the best bet, even an exterior ply clad one will outlast the cheap online stuff.

I built one at my old house using 50mm x 50mm framing and 12mm exterior ply (painted) with a 50mm x 5mm strip covering all the joins to keep the weather out of the ply end, that was in 1980 and the guy's still using it as a workshop.

I totally agree with this... I bought a shed from an online retailer some years ago... Within 3 years it was fit for the scrap heap...

I'm thinking of another shed, but I'll definitely be spending the extra this time and building my own. It costs (much) more to build your own, but honestly the ones online (at least the ones that are "reasonably" priced) are terrible quality.

I've repaired the shed that was here when we moved in numerous times. Originally it was 8x6. The floor gave way so that was reinforced and replaced. The roof gave up in a couple of places, and that was replaced too. A tree then fell asleep on it, I made a 4x6 "Pent" shed from its remains, which has stood longer without repair than the original did.

Problem is, for cheapness, they use untreated wood, OSB for the floor and roof and the moisture is sucked straight in creating mush..

I'd have a look for concrete garage panels.
Usually 2ft apiece, but you can get 1ft panels.
You'd also need one sheet of box profile roofing.
Should only cost you ? 80 quid.
Maybe less if you ask about.
I have a 1ft wide panel here in south Leeds you can have FOC if you collect

Hmm, yes it depends on what OP means by shed We have a log cabin / garden office that is of decent quality, but it basically has nothing in common to the normal "online garden sheds" affairs, apart from both being garden buildings

Hence why I opened my statement by saying "I don't know about their smaller sheds"

All I can say is that the one we have is decent quality and they also sell smaller sheds, so it may be worth checking them out.

There is a place around 20 miles from me who make sheds, I went Saturday and looked, the ones there just looked flimsy to be honest, they were just show ones so I'm guessing they are quickly slapped together for you to look at.

As for making one myself, I don't think I would be able to do it myself but it a still an option

I did look at tiger sheds. Out of all the online ones these seem the best

lot of these sheds are made using shiplap which isn't always the best quality in the first place and then it goes and shrinks leaving gaps between planks, id make my own or as mentioned above garage panels they are more secure

I bought a cheapish shed for mowers etc and it's rubbish, the roof is bowing in and the doors have almost fallen off, my next job is to repair and reinforce it with some better beams than the puny 2×2 it's built from.
I built my woodshed from reclaimed floorboards & 2X3 timber very cheaply, it's been up 5 years now and still looks solid, I give it a coat of creosote and sump oil every few years.

Hi current oftec rules state that an oil tank must be 760 mm from combustable wall or have fire wall 100 mm round the boundery of the tank, fire board will do.

That's right. They do nothing about it though. Our tank is 400mm from two fences, and the hard-standing its on doesn't extend far enough around the perimeter, its also within 5mtrs of a well and drain without bunding.

It was of course installed 10 years ago I believe, and the boiler has been replaced and all paperwork completed satisfactorily.

I'm going to be building my own shed in the next few weeks. I had a look at some YouTube videos and was the same as how I thought I would do it any way. Good luck what ever you decide.

At 3ft x 6ft I would just a get a local shed maker to do it. Check their work out and ask questions like is it pressure treated wood and which type of softwood it is. As long as it's solid enough and doesn't rot it will do the job. You won't be using it as a workshop at 3 foot wide so it's just basically a storage shed.

Once up use some oil based wood preservative (I think you can still get decking stuff oil based) and it should last many many years.
