Garden Sculptures - Going to have a bash

Having seen Chunko's and gerrymoore projects it's inspired me to have a go at making a little project for my garden. I've got a little boy so i thought i'd make something he might like when he's a bit older.

Now i'm no artist so i'm going to have to nick someones elses creative skills so a quick scan on ebay threw up some of these

so the plan is to get a sheet of 1.5mm steel (was quoted less than £30 for a 2mx1m sheet from a local stockist) get one of those kits (<£5) and abuse the photocopier at work to enlarge the pieces onto some A3 to give me some templates to cut around and away i go

i've not got a plasma cutter but i reckon i should be able to do a reasonal job with a jigsaw

Hmmm that would be a shed load of jigsawing, if you were a real Man you would use a fretsaw. (JOKING)

How about looking at the shapes and just using what is needed to make the 'thing' that is how I work, I look at the subject and try to take out all the bits that I dont need. Eg the Pterosaur, it has long pointy wings, long pointy head, long dingly dangly legs. And Oi!! that one has not got a curved tail with a small rudder on it. These can all be made in one piece as 2 dimensional shapes, the head and legs in the vertical plane, the wings horizontal. The body (and tail) could also be 2D in the vertical plane,maybe use round bar for the tail. That gives you six components. Also then you are not tied to the original, fancier head? bigger jaws? mad staring ball bearing eyes?

When people look at a sculpture they want something that shouts out 'I AM A FLIPPING DINOSAUR' not fancy details, especially the kids, they are the best art critics ever, and the scariest.

Matt says 'Now I'm no artist' No we can all make art, we just have to find our 'thingy'. Most people who call themselves artists are poncy gits.

Have a go Matt....I used one of those kits myself for Terry Dactil but used the computer to scale up the parts. I cut them out of ply and then plasma cut around the templates...a lot of work I must say but the end result is great (he said modestly!!)

As Chunko suggested, just basic shapes would do the job as kids ar'nt interested in perfection....let's see your efforts on here!!

I'm having a bash at the velociraptor next!
