Garden multi tools.

Morning everyone,

Since moving to our new house it's clear that my old trusty bull handle strimmer is just overkill for the amount of lawn I now have.

I also have a need to reach a bit higher as the previous owners were not on top of their foliage so I fancy one of these multi tools.

Now I am a big husqvarna fanboy and everything I currently have is husky (even though the strimmer has a sovereign badge on it )

The trouble is that their engine with strimmer head alone is £250, then the same again for both the pruner and hedge cutter attachment and another £60 for the extension pole, so over £800 for the full kit haven't looked at Stihl because their bladed article policy annoys me. I'm sure they wouldn't be competitive enough anyhow.

There seems to be a real lack of mid range gear here that I can find, with most stuff in budget being cheap junk.

So I'm after any recommendations.

Requirements are...

£250ish budget.
Petrol.
Not required to spend hours every year to rebuild the damn thing after winter.

2 I keep coming back to are the Hyundai HYMT5200 @ £200 and the Titan TTK587GDO.

Both the Hyundai and Titan look the same as the non-brand set I built up over a few years. Same spec, and the tools look the same.

Advice? Save your money (literally) and buy better quality individual tools. I gradually tired of fighting against each tool and spent another £100 to £200 replacing each one and each individual tool is so much better than the multi tool equivalent.

The only thing I still use the multiset for is the rotavator attachment and that's only because I don't use it often enough to buy a "real" one. It drives me nuts when I do use it, but that's only for 30 minutes, once a year.

I'm at EH30 - you're more than welcome to borrow the kit if that helps you make up your mind?

not that i have tryed any of the two units but with screwfix i found there warrenty very good but only used there warrenty twice over the years

an other thing that makes me think the hyundai is not that great as all the little extras you get with it (as with welders you get a mask and gloves etc in the box) normaly crys im good value but generaly not

and the shape of the hyundai ive seen that before but cant put my finger on who makes it i would say its an item bought and rebaged

The problem I found with multitools, even the Stihl versions, is the weight.
By the time you bolt all the bits together it's a hefty lump for sustained use and it's a back killer.
Give me seperates for the job every time.

I already have a hedge trimmer and a chainsaw it's just odd occasion I need the reach of the multi tool. The ground level stuff does the bulk of the work.

The cost of individual long reach stuff is eye watering too for the amount of use it will get, that coupled with having to find space for all these 2 stroke units I really think a multi tool would fit the bill for the odd branch that is out of reach.

That being said I'll take a look at cheaper individuals, my strimmer is still brilliant it's just way bigger than I need.

I've always been impressed with the Titan gear but never had petrol gear from them, it'll just be rebranded Chinese but the support is there for it.

For the amount of use they will get I can't see the weight being a problem. No particluar sustained use, I have lightweight gear for the majority of tasks.

Also I'm a big fat Scotsman so I'll be fine.

I bought the Titan when it was on offer a couple of years ago, the strimmer head is a bit of a pain to feed the wire but other than that all I can say is that it works fine. I always drain the petrol after use and so far it has been as good as gold to start and runs perfectly even if not used for six months.
No real recommendation because it is my only 2T petrol powered garden tool and I have nothing to compare it with except the Suzuki X7 I once had, it starts easier than a Suzuki X7

I bought a cheap and nasty multi tool just for the extension pole hedge trimmer.......£95 and still going strong.......it don't get used a lot....3 times a year'ish.......
have a 3-4mx20m high Laural hedge........

We bought my Father in Law the Lidl Florabest one and it's good but heavy.
Brushcutter with strimmer attachment, pole saw, hedge cutter and extension pole.

Yes but if you still had the X7 it would trade for some serious multi tool kit

TITAN from SCREWFIX......mine fell apart within a few weeks.......took it back.....cant exhange it theres chemicals in it......yes its petrol......went outside and tipped it in car park......full refund......TBH forgot some of the bits so they are still in the garage I think.

I had a Makita Strimmer that was brilliant but when I bought the 3 in one IITAN I gave it to my son.....big mistake

Since then I have broken my foot / ankle so I paid someone to cut the hedge this year and the weeping willows have been left alone (they are a mess though)

I have a Titan set and it does an ok job for a 25cc unit. The carburettor packed up after 2 years. I found the same replacement on a Chinese web site for $1.77 each if I bought 600. Found one on Amazon for £8 that was better than the original as it had adjustable jets.

I'd forgot about a Cobra unit I had previously looked at, £250, might be worth a shout. I've heard cobra is ok but no actual experience, anyone?

Par for the course sometimes even with the better gear. Those little carbs all look identical, copies of a brand I can't remember, but most are slightly different on the inside so getting rebuild kits is sometimes impossible and like you did, buying new is less hassle.
