Been busy lately taking advantage of the dry weather. The garage is coming along nicely. A month ago got the footings in and foundation walls up to slab level, wacked in some hardcore, then placed an 8" slab; and this past week we raised the walls up, with just a few more blocks needed to finish up over the lintels. Weather permitting, I should have the roof on by the end of next week.

My friend and I fabricated a steel jamb for the roll up door, which will be anchored with screws and bonded to the walls with concrete grout.

The door people I contacted tried to convince me to have the track attached to the inside wall (the easy peasy way) which would have allowed water to run in under the slab; no way jose.

To prevent water ingress, I figured coating the inside face of the outer wall cavity with Bitumin, and leave the face of the inside wall uncoated for the grout to bond to should work out reasonably well. A 2"x 4" slid down the cavity as a shutter until the grout sets up enough will finish the job.

Thanks. One of the reasons that I got into construction and made it my career, is that you are always doing something different, and have a feeling of accomplishment for your efforts.

Showing my ignorance here but whats the fork like contraption leaning against the wall in the picture for? Some sort of concrete poker / tamper?

Its just a garden pitch fork I bought at Wilko a couple of years ago, and a nice one too; cost about £12.oo if I remember correctly. I used it to dig out some roots in the slab area before backfilling.

Ahhhh, disappointing, and there was me thinking it was some amazing tool that I was going to have to rush out and buy.

Still looks dead handy though, might have to get myself one for the allotment.

arc tourist put a hole in the cement between the blocks so it creates a drain out holes for water its used alot in buildings nowadays

more so at the point where you have turned your blocks so they are stood on end only need 2 drain holes at each end and you can drill those easy enough

I have holes drilled just above the footings on the left and right sides of the photo in post #5 above.

Steel jambs are in and the roof joists are up, ready to drop down onto the inner wall when I get the end noggins in. Happy day, but I'm feeling my age as wet 2"x 9" 's are not the lightest timbre to manage overhead by yourself.

Progress: Blocking, or noggins as you call them here are in, and the framing levered down. Thankfully it was a beautiful day today, which allowed me to sheath and nail the roof ready for flashing. Got some torch down primer to roll on which will essentially seal the OSB sheeting from rain until my roofer friend can do his thing next week. After my Niece's partner renders the outside, metal roofing will will be added over the torch down felt, and hopefully this will outlast me.

Got some painting done, tie down straps installed, and the window frame installed; but unfortunately I cracked the 3' x 6' double glass. The glass supplier said he would get me another in about a week, and at cost. Yesterday we laid the torch down felt on the roof, and now I'm just waiting for the metal roof sheets to arrive. I haven't been able to find a lintel for the walk in door of the correct size, so I made up a form to pour my own.

Bespoke lintel came out alright, just needed to clean up the drip slot and its good to go. The galvanized roll up door installation is scheduled for tomorrow, so moving right along.

Lintel is mudded in, a perfect fit if I do say so myself , and the roll up door guys did their thing yesterday. Just need to install the walk in steel door to button it up.

Steel doors are in and the floor has had its first coat of Multicrete sealant, only used about 6 litres to cover the floor. The jury on its effectiveness will be out until a few month have gone by. I took a photo as this is probably the last time the garage will look tidy. Just the window trim and paint left to do to finish it cosmetically.

Waiting on delivery of a proper hard bristle masonry paint brush to finish the walls, regular brushes and rollers are hard work and not up to the task to fill the voids. So, have done what I could to finish an area ready for the move out from our storage unit. Most of the surplus containers are in.

Now, if it only stops raining.
