Evening fella's

Just wondering how many blokes that are on this forum, and do welding/grinding in their garages/sheds and have declared it to their home insurance providers?

I plan on doing bits and bobs in mine, and I've kind of had this insurance question at the back of my mind. My mother in law started questioning me about it this afternoon. So I'm just wondering if any of u guys have sorted Insurence out and is it pretty plain sailing to get cover for welding in your garage? do your premiums go through the roof? Or do u just turn a blind eye to it?

Any advice would be great

i just take the chance and be carefull when using any heat source including grinding.gas bottles stored away from anything flamable as well

as long as its insured, if you do happen to burn it down i doubt there will be an investigation unless you kill someone or take someone elses buildings with it, just keep a fire extinguisher handy

Same as bright spark , I stay in the garage at least 40 mins after I finish any hot work just to be sure. Did hear that if you have fuel gas you are pretty much uninsurable

That was the route I was gonna go down. But the mother in law has put abit of a spanner in the works! got me kind of thinking "what if the worst was to happen" ?

cant see it been cheap, they will want to know everything and may insist on a flamstore if you keep thinners, paints and so on

if u were so concerned fit a rise in temperature alarm and link a smoke alarm to it in the house one goes off both go off.and as above post get a decent fire extinguisher on hand

Yeah I think I'll be doing the same. Give myself enough time after welding/grinding, so that nothing is smouldering and sets on fire.
Defo won't be having oxy fuel in there. Maybe just a small blow lamp for Ali preheat.

Tried getting a quote once, it was all going well with no problems with mig and stick welders and propane being in there until oxy acetylene was mentioned. They then decided that it would have to be insured as a business premises and the costs went through the roof.

I've seen what happens when an acetylene cylinder goes off happened at a friends farm many years back it was literally a bomb site, I can see why insurance companies are wary.

hence why it costs a fortune to insure u for having them . would u take the risk for peanuts
