Garage wood burner

As its getting a bit chilly in the garage now i thought i would make good use of an old cylinder we had kicking about.

Its not finished yet as it needs vents and a handle, i was going to make it a lockable handle but its seems to stay closed all by its self.

The cylinder is about 8-10mm thick and the top plate is about 4mm i welded it with 0.6 wire as my 0.8 had ran out and my supermig 150 turned to max. The welds look fairly good and feels pretty solid.

Anyways hope you like it, im happy with it so far and i think not a bad job considering my limited welding skills

Any tips on making it more efficiant welcome.

I'm assuming there will be a few more mods to it - i.e. flue to expel fumes/gases, maybe a grate with ash pan underneath to improve airflow, maybe an adjustable air intake valve/dial.

I would also err on the side of caution as well and have a carbon monoxide alarm in the garage just in case.

It has a flue and will be ducted to my garages extractor fan. Will get some pictures when its all installed.
I was thinking of an inlet valve on the side but low down.
As for the ash i dont mind scooping it out with a trowel for now....if it becomes a pain i guess i can add something in.

There is a fire extinguisher in the garage too

Fair enough - I would still invest in the carbon monoxide alarm though.

I hate to say it, flue looks far too small a diameter, and as for hooking it up to an extractor fan??

It's not dedicated extractor for this, its industrial sized. all will become clear when it's installed. If the pipe ends up chocking the fire I'll add another pipe, had a couple of fires in it and seems to be fine.

i would have thought that the heat will damage the extractor fan, my flue gets red hot if i stoke it up enough.
i would also agree with the earlier comment about the flue being small, it maybe ok with a small fire but once stoked up to heat the garage it may choke up

I suppose if the fan was blowing across the flu outlet, as in the fan is behind the flu and using a venture effect to aid extraction that may work but a bigger flu pipe and a dedicated exit would be a more sensible option i would say

How about using a condensing boiler fan. I wonder if that would work so it could vent it horizontally out the workshop
