garage roof

Hi All ,i have a 20x20ft garage that has been built with the lefthand wall virtually on the boundary and there is a metre space between the rear wall and the rear boundary,it was bulit many years ago and now needs re roofing,Can I put a pitch roof on it providing I don`t exceed 4m in height?Currently the sloping roof is about 2.5m high,will i need any involvement with the local authority?

Fairly sure the following is the present regs:

Outbuildings and garages to be single storey with maximum eaves height of 2.5 metres and maximum overall height of four metres with a dual pitched roof or three metres for any other roof

my workshop was built WITHOUT planning, the local officer said as long as its less than 4mtrs from the highest point of ground then its within regulations, having said that its about 6 mtrs from the nearest boundary
