Garage doors - standard sizes?

I think there are standard sizes for garage door and I'm wondering if mine is a non standard opening, the door that is on now is a awful fit - 3 inch gap at the bottom and a 1 inch gap at the top.

Measured it today and its 7' wide (standard size) but its 7' 4" high.

My original plan was to make and replace it with 2 side hinged steel frame doors with wood cladding but it would be much quicker if I could buy some standard wooden doors but after a quick bit of searching I cant find any to fit.

Roller door was an option but I don't think there is enough room between the underside of the lintel and underside of the roof.

Thats a big old gap at the bottom! Haha. Atleast you get good ventilation.

I would go the whole way if building metal doors & cover them in sheet steel instead of wood. Stronger & longer lasting.

You need about 350mm for the roller but you can put the canopy outside if you havent the space. I'm just making one with a second roller to change the direction of the action which will turn the curtain in about 75 to 100mm but its only in development just now.

Yeah it it/was a bit breezy When we moved the draft proofing was a row of bricks which I changed to a rubber strip and a rubber threshold but its still drafty in the usual up and over places.

Metal cover is best option but wife isn't too keen, I've been thinking about somehow creating grooves to soften visual impact.

Pretty sure there isn't that much space but will double check. Canopy on the outside a definite no as the garage is attached to the house.

A sectional door will take up less headroom. A bit dearer though.

There are quite a few firms on line who will make wooden doors to your dimensions....

I like roller doors, prefer the steel to the ali ones but insulated would be good.

I have a sectional door with a screwfix motor, takes up virtually zero headroom and is the best buy I ever made.

I bought the 25mm double skin insulated model and when it's down it's as solid as a wall, no handles on the outside for lowlifes to attack, been up about 9 years now and still looks like new with no problems at all.

Sectional doors are something I hadn't considered!

Is £900 to £1000 the rough cost of a steel sectional door or am I finding expensive ones? Compared to the 7 by 7 wooden doors I've been seeing for £300ish they seem a lot of money!

Suspect youll be about right finished and fitted fir a sectional door at a grand. But ring round with your measurments..january sales and all that!

Mine is a Kaufmann..or something like that, they really are top grade and it cost just over £800 fitted, the electric motor was I think about £100 from Screwfix, they do offer to sell you a costly German motor but the Screwfix one works perfectly and once the door was in position I installed it myself in an hour.

Having no external handles is a good security feature, at night once I am finished and use a side door I also slide over an internal locking pin, not really required but makes it about as secure as you can get without using a grinder to cut through the door.

Other doors are cheaper but when you see one of these in action and realise how strong they are you understand what you are paying for, none of the fittings have corroded, they are stainless or heavily galvanised.

When it glides shut there is not even a dot of light showing anywhere around it and the bottom has a heavy rubber tube that compresses slightly on the ground, it can be battered by gale force winds and torrential rain and nothing gets through.

Initially I was put off by the price but my mate encouraged me to go for it and I am glad I did, they also carry a 10 year warranty.

Its great (lazy is good) pressing the fob as I come around the corner and drive straight in, no more dashing in the rain lifting doors

Yeah Hormann sounds better ...brilliant kit.
