Garage door springs.

I have been very luck with my garage door apparently getting 20 years from a wayne dalton idrive system is unheard of. lol

But now it's broken. heavy handed son. but still it was going to happen sooner rather than later.

I have seen a kit that will convert it from torquemaster to torsion springs.
But this is when the confusion arises.....it seems the systems used in the UK are a totally different design. they seem to stretch rather than wind up.

Is this normal or am I using Google wrong?

UK garage door spring site...search for torsion you get no results. lol

but they do exist........in the states are they illegal in the UK?

If it's an up and over like mine then the 2 springs are mounted horizontally at the top, one for each side of the door, and connected to it by some pulleys and cable. Incidentally after one of the cables broke my door had been working for a while with one but recently one of the rollers came off and it discombobulated itself a bit. Que new door next year (get the expense of Christmas out the way first).
I think those are what you mean. But i could be very wrong if it's a different kind of door. Mines Garadoor.

I have been known to use less polite words when describing something that is in a non serviceable state! Trying to baby proof my language as a nephew has arrived on the scene, and this is a family friendly forum, plus I like words which sound like the thing they are describing, and discombobulate certainly fits the bill for what my garage door did to itself

My old man picked it up when working at Rautomead in Dundee, and your right it does sound like the right term, albeit...it actually means to confuse...which I suppose many things do when they dismantle themselves unexpectedly...

My dad is really having to watch, as my nephew is at the rapidly learning to talk phase...he has already picked up a few things off his mum and dad, my mrs swore in front of him, and my brother (sprogs dad) was just like "meh, I swear too, he's going to hear worse growing up"...he will for sure if he is near me or the old man when we are working on cars...my dog has learned to bark at whatever isn't complying...I think she figures if she shouts too it might help matters...

Anyway back on topic, which spring type are you after torsion or tension?

I know a guy that suffered a severe head injury from dismantling a garage door. The spring had so much stored energy and struck him in front of his ear. Three months in an induced coma and 5 years on and he has only recovered about 40% brain function. If it has anything to do with the spring proceed with extreme caution. He was an incredibly careful intelligent man that now cannot feed himself or talk properly.

Torsion. but I need a full replacement kit as mine is a long discontinued and now obsolete wayne dalton i drive.

Yes it does have spring in the same place as yours but my guess is yours is more like what the guy in this video replaces the original ones with.

But I can't find the replacement kit in the UK so far.

It's just crazy how they seem to be a standard in the UK but like a unicorn or dodo in the uk.

I think I might be better off looking for Lord lucan or shergar I might find them quicker. e

I think it's a foregone conclusion that both of those have been several feet under for a good while. Some Irishman claimed to have machine-gunned the horse shortly after it was stolen.

When my door broke I stiffened the frame up a bit and fitted ss fire door hinges and a hefty shoot bolt inside, the increased headroom allowed my landrover in as well. Not quite so useful for the 911 that replaced it but the improved security is welcome.

It's just confusing why the torsion spring system seems to have a standard in the states but does not seem to be a standard in the UK.

I realise mine is obsolete for spares but the door can still be used in the states with the addition of a basic torsion bar system.

I just don't understand why it's not easily available in the UK. indeed a search for torsion spring garage door in Ebay and filtered to the UK only flags up 2 identical springs, where the same search allowing stuff from the states brings up over a 1000 items. lol

I was just thinking the same, Henderson where one of the better makes I used to fit, might be a source for spares.

What is exactly broken on your door ? You'll probably need to de-tension the springs before it's safe to work on. If you could post some pictures we could explain how to proceed safely. It's not hard but there is a lot of potential energy stored in those springs so it pays to be careful.

To be fair there is actually nothing broke on my door.

The problem is I need to replace a cable that has come out. Whilst doing this I might as well fit new one as both sides are now very old and starting to kink quite badly.

I now know to replace the cable I need to remove the end bearings and end cones.

Now I know the electronics is obsolete so if it breaks I need to fix it.

If it breaks mechanically that parts are only available from the states.


So my thoughts were to pre-empt this issue and fit a replacement spring system and opener as my door is over 20 years old.

The springs are thin enough to fit INSIDE the long bar. Torqmaster version one. I have managed to find brilliant videos to make sure I am safe while replacing it.

My issue is I wish to replace it with a standard torsion system. BUT it would seem it's not a standard in the UK and I can't find out why as it's simple and cost effective.

My opener is Torqmaster fitted with I drive. purchased from B and Q made by Wayne dalton....supplied to B and Q by Wayne Dalton UK who have now ceased trading.

It's obsolete both here and the Uk but the door can be saved by retro fitting a larger torsion system and overhead opener. Which I am considering to pre-empt a failure when I can least afford it or when weather is very poor.
