Gaming laptop.

My son is looking to buy my grandson a gaming laptop for Xmas instead of all the crap items they usually get him that he never plays with.
So I told him Lenovo as a number on here mentioned them.

Is this one decent.

Depends. GPU is lacking. Nvme but small so would need to upgrade to at least a tb Some games can be 100 FB or more on the install size so storage needs to be higher
Not likely to run triple a games flat out if that's what he's expecting

I'm away at the moment but I can confirm spec when I get home tomorrow; I seem to recall installing an SSD.

Yeah the 15.4 inch one is 40 quid cheaper. So no brainer really

Spends most of his time on fortnight or smash Bros . He also spends a great deal of time researching on YouTube and just lately I hooked out my old (but rarely used) Wacom px631w and he used it easier than me and now wants to learn how to draw digitally.

Should be fine then. Might have to turn the graphics down on some of the newest games for a Smooth experience.

Budget for a new nvme. Just installed a sabrent rocket in my desktop. Think it was 120 for a 1tb

So it does not have an SSD fitted then?

I thought Nvme was the hard drive. But sounds like it's the GPU ram.??

I am confused as most laptops you could not upgrade GPU if I remember correctly?

I would look at older game titles such as roller coaster tycoon, the sims, age of empires and theme hospital. You could run those games on a almost anything.
New titles are all about graphics and graphics cards are really expensive at the moment.

Yeah I see the logic but he plays what he sees on YouTube.
To be honest I can't afford mega bucks for new games. He is starting to get to the age he has his own mind sadly ..lol

Why a laptop over a desktop? I can't imagine a seven year old needs much portability?

Nvme or ssd are new terms for hard drive

Gpu (graphics card) ram is sometimes called nvram

Nvme is an SSD that uses the pcie lanes rather than the storage controllers. Is a lot faster. The laptop has one fitted but it's 200 odd GB. It's tiny by today's standards and easily filled by the OS and a couple of games

He lives between his house and ours due to the fact I am retired and his mom and dad both work and start early.

He has a desktop at home and access to two at my house.

Have you tried steam.
Been using it for many years and simplifies installing and backing up games for the future

Yeah it's installed on the Desktops. I can't say I know what it is or does.

Buy and store games on there
I've been using it since the beginning around 2003/4

Unlike physical games I've owned I haven't lost the games by misplacing disks or keys.

its upgradable and will last longer in the long run
