galvanizing paint help

has anyone used this galvanizing paint? what were the results like? do you need primer or does it go straight on metal? thanks

Which galvanising paint?

Some stuff I've seen is less of a paint and more of a chemical broth that starts an electrolytic reaction to plate Zinc onto the steel so it needs to go onto clean bare steel. Generally painted on and left to dry before being wire-brushed off.

Other stuff is really just a paint with lots of Zinc solids in it and the only real galvanising that takes place it if damage occurs and water gets to both the paint and the underlying steel at which point the Zinc in the paint acts like a sacrificial anode to protect the steel.

Yet other stuff is applied with a special brush that has conductive bristles and is connected to a power supply (and an earth on the workpiece like when welding). It's actually just electroplating in a localised area rather than having to dunk the object in a tank of Zinc salt solution.

this is just simple galv paint the make is kramp if that helps. its a zinc rich paint. just really want to know weather i need primer or not as it seems like you dnt!

If you prime it then how is is supposed to work as the primer will act as a barrier between the zinc and the metal?
Simple when you think about it.

I use galvafroid, seems ok but you need to give it a good stir as it sits in a big lump in the bottom of the tin. Very expensive!

does sound simple but people that sell the paint cant give me def answer so cant be that simple. and the test peice that i have done does not want to stick to metal either have cleaned it off really well to.

Paints, however fancy they sound are no real substitute for hot dip galv unless you start buying professional paint systems that cost 4-5 hundred quid for 20 litres, are applied by a professional outfit, and are put on at 250-300 microns DFT.

its just for some frames of some sheet ed doors for a shed its only fronts that are really going to take weather and there be covered with with galv sheet so customer is happy with frames being painted.

X2 on Galvafroid, Very high in zinc solids,As already mentioned, needs a very good stir before using,The tins are very heavy compared with normal paints,Needs to be applied to clean metal, I used it on bottle garden stand after shot blasting,Never did get round to putting a finish coat of paint over it,and it's still 100% rust free after over 40 years, Very pricy but you get what you pay for, Also used some spray can zinc from Screwfix on another job and it's absolutely cr*p.

I've seen videos for Zinga but it looks like an industrial coating. It's supposed to be cathodic as well as a paint and can be painted over when cured. It sounds like the kind of professional thing Paul mentioned.

IMO is the stuff for pillions.the steel is normally galvanised as well. MIO is ok but if its stuff to be handled it leaves a residue that doesn't walk off (or out of clothing)

We make a lot of gates / railings and most get galvanised and painted .used to use mordant solution then a top coat of normal paint as the mordant solution keys to the galv and then the top coat keys to the mordant solution. But now we just buy paint with etch in it and paint it straight on job done ,its something similar to a paint called vinylast which is obtainable from b rourkes .

The paint we get is from manor coatings and is called high buils vinyl .

They use a slightly different paint for pylons ,its strange stuff mind its doesn't like been thinned down ,a company called stokes used to make pylon paint don't know if they still do though ,I have a few tins kicking about and it's good for the odd repair job .
