Ive just got a bill for £150.00 for:

40x40 box section gate at 3m x 1.8m (no infill just square frame)
40x40 box section gate 0.8m x 1.8 m (no infill just square frame)

They reckon it weighed 188 kg after galv.... was pretty shocked on price. 60p per kilo + vat is that correct?

About the same for me when I enquired:

50p a Kilo + VAT and I suspect there would have been a collection and delivery charge added to that too.

I don't understand why they are quoting the weight 'after' the treatment, it is usually the weight prior that's priced.

Always worth trying to link with one of the bigger local companies to see if they will let you bundle in with theirs.

You can google sites that tell you the weight/metre of metal if you wish to estimate for future work.

I just had some gates fitted and I asked the guy who he used for galv etc.

He told me he pays 60p per kilo with a minimum 50kg, and if I wanted any small bits doing to give them to him and he'd throw them in with one of his batches.

We pay 34p a kilo now, but send them tonnes every month. You are probably getting hit with a minimum invoice charge.

Its fairly easy to work out the rough weight of what you send them. They weigh them after galv, so add 10% to the total.

 

[Metallisation]

Another option to consider for you could be metal spraying (sometimes called hot zinc spray). This process is a spraying process that melts the zinc (or other metal) wire, atomises the molten metal and sprays it onto the steel. It is normally costed by area so can be cost effective compared to galv particularly for thicker section steel where the weight/area ratio increases.

There's normally less/no fettling required after application. It's a line of sight spray process and it does not flow inside tubular sections so you need to consider this in your design, e.g. No open sections but also no need to drill air holes like you do when halving closed sections. It's fair to say that some fabs can be galved or metal sprayed, some only galved, some only metal sprayed.

I pay 42p a kilo and dont get a big pile done even if its one 10kg weight from n.ireland
