Quick question , got some agricultural railings /gates to fab , should of been done 3 months ago , the steel has been outside that long and has some surface rust . will it galv ok ?? after all its goes in an acid bath prior to dipping
cheers mike
If its just light surface rust the galvaniser may just put it in the acid bath, he may want it blasted depending if the rust is heavy.
If i remember right it is a hydrogen reduction reaction, & in hydrocloric acid with a bit of zinc the rust will be removed quickly & violently, trouble is heavy rust will kill the acid faster so the galvaniser likes stuff to be clean as possible.
I just used Rayleigh Galvanisers who farm their stuff out to a plant in East London & they were very reasonable on price.
I've just had a couple of 100 x 50 x 6 x 3 metre channels done, they had been outside for more than a year so very rusty. The galvaniser was quite happy to just acid dip them. If they had to be blast cleaned he said it would be about £80 quid, which is what the galvanising cost!
Cheers for the replys gents , theres certainly no oil left on the steel now al ! , didnt fancy having to pay to have it blasted so its good news .
Just got to pull me finger out and get the stuff welded up
cheers mike
