Galvanised trunking...to wood?

I want to run some 50x50 galv trunking at high level around the garage. First though was to space it say 15/20mm off the underside of the trusses and screw through to the timber wall plate. This to allow space if I ever say plasterboard the garage ceiling. The trunking would sit say 1/4" off the wall plate (on plastic packs), where it passes over the vertical restraint straps etc. A run also has to come down over that restraint strap where the brick pillar meets the Celcon blocks.

Fixing to wood, is this a bad idea?

(No I didn't have the engine hoist up there to pull an engine out).

Was over thinking in the event of fire. All that business of fireproof cable clips etc. Someone else said if the wall plate's on fire the trunking will need replacing anyway!

Where it passes over the doorway (the escape route) it'll have to be fixed anyway to the celcon blockwork.

I'm feeling guilty as I bought pre made corners. Going to dig out my college made corners just to prove I can.....well, could

Could you tek screw it to the restraint straps and/or truss clips if you want to go that route? Or buy an extra restraint strap, cut it into 100mm pieces, screw to the trunking and then screw the downwards-projecting part to the blockwork.

If it is in your own home, then you can do what you want really. Galv screwed onto the wall plate is going to be as sound as anything else and better than you will find in most garages.

The whole fire rated thing is only for escape routes, although some scams would have you believe everything is an escape route.
Completely pointless exercise really IMO - there will be millions of miles of plastic clipped cables in place for decades to come, and that's not including all the comms cables that are still being draped across suspended ceilings.

Where it comes down the wall I'm going to have to put a set it it to line up with where the duct comes up through the floor slab. I didn't think that one through!

First step I suppose is to actually get all of the trunking out of the car...

I've somewhat "painted myself into a corner" in the garage. Just kept filling it up over the years with acquired tat. Not a working garage at all. I have to fit the trunking above this line of shelves:

If I can get the trunking in it'll let me put one bank of those orange shelves back up. Might gain another square foot of floor space. Or I'll fill the shelves up with yet more stuff I can't say no to and be back to square one!

Step 2 begun. Stared at the job in hand, came indoors.

This is the aspect you seriously need to address, otherwise this thread is going to be like all the space you're hoping to recover.....not happening.

as far as fixing it to wooden beams down escape routs its not a problem as long as the cables are strapped with metal clips in plastic trunking or metal with woodscrews

Wood takes a surprisingly long time to burn through at the point the timber has failed the structure would no longer be sound.

But plastic clips wilt pretty quickly.


Personally I dont think the new reg is nonsense, it came about to protect firefighters
