A lot of people insist on putting cheap 10/40 semi synthetic or even mineral oil in these engines because its cheaper, they will not pay a few pounds more for the correct oil even though we tell them it will damage the engine
We also sell a lot of camshafts, cam bearings and followers to taxi owners

taxi owners, most are cheap skates that work all the hours they can, bodge where ever they can, drive like loonys and bump into things ( not all but most)

not a very good system the PD one on the VAG
but caterpillar use unit injectors but as i said correct oil works

my HDI pug did 297000 miles without engine or turbo being touched
but oil and filter every 6000 miles given a minute at tickover at start up and shut down
it did have a clutch, gearbox, power steering pump, alternator, starter,
lots of discs and pads only 1 set of rear brake shoes 1 exhaust system
4 bottom arms lots of tyres used as a black taxi over 8 years
lots of other little bits only pain was used to put engine management light on if the air filter got a bit dirty just changed it a bit more often

Octo, I doubt your HDI had the shove of half the PD engines.

It was emissions I believe that caused the demise of the PD, they couldn't be as flexible as the common rail with injection timing. But I think PD could achieve higher injection pressures than the common rail units. Also, I think the PD design had been about since the nineties, so getting a bit long in the tooth, diesels have now moved to 16 valve, so there certainly wasn't going to be room in the PD's valve train to squeeze in another 8 valves!

I think it's a bit extreme calling it a crap engine, it seems to have been one of the most popular diesel engines on the planet, I think I only know of someone who's had injector trouble with theirs.

pug was 90bhp i said the PD engine had known problems

That was the lower power version with smaller intercooler, my Xantia has the 110 hp version with larger intercooler and the same engine went upto 136 hp in the C4, C5 etc.
The latest 2.2 goes upto 173 HP in twin turbo form, not bad for a 4 cylinder ! It is tweakable to substantially more than that though, a C5 2.2 owner I know of has got his down to 0-60 in 6.5 seconds !!

I work in a motor factors and its a problem trying to convince people that they need a certain type of oil, they think we are just trying to get them to buy the top grade oil.
Taxi drivers are amongst the worst but they should know better.
If someone chooses to ignore our advice and put cheaper oil in then its their problem

Service interval 10k on mine, with what they call long life its 16k for an oil change.

I am not aware of any box shifter that uses fully snyth, its either mineral or semi synth made by a large oil company.

Last car 10w/30w, current 5w/30w, run em both on 0w/30w because it flows better when cold where most of the damage occurs.

Ive seen very high mileage heads removed from cars run on mineral oil changed often. I wouldnt run the cheap stuff sold at local motor factors though plus a few major brands that sludge up too quick.

Amsoil very underated, used it last gearbox to 137k and nippers 2T petrol mix.

oil is cheaper than steel, i use semi 15-40 in my tdi300 disco change it at 3000 miles 6.5 litres of oil each time. so far have 175000 and still like new.it had a good service history in its younger days which helps.

I do about 15k a year in my disco 2 and have a fully service each year, i top up the oil when required but only ever change it yearly after about 15k
