how do i get full pen doing vertical up 3g arc welding or isnt it necessary for 3g?

I've only done the test in mig but full pen is definitely needed and the only way you will know is from experience and lots of practice on test pieces. Try and keep all your test pieces exactly the same i.e. the same prep angle on the metal with the same gap (and as per the test parameters). The root needs to show full pen with a small constant bead.

cheers i have been practicing alot and iv been taking my time preping the plate before i weld wich iv started to realise is probably one of the most important things in welding. thanks again, much apreciated

As you've realised the prep is also really important, to wide and you'll blow through to easily on the root and have to fill to much. If it's to narrow you'll not get side wall fusion which according to the guy who used to test all my cat1 butts is the most common failure. Good luck with the test.

this used to work for me when putting in th root
When I used to weld virtically up with stick ,

make you landing then look into the prep right at the end of the rod you will see it's like a very small onion shape if it closes up you have lost you pen stop and grind back and restart.

If starts to open up to much it is starting to burn through dont pull the rod off drop slightly and push the rod in.

move up in very small rotating circle manor to insure sides burn in.

thanks guys. gettin really good now hopefully move on to 6g soon enough haha. hey sparky, yeah its good to meet you, shame you live in france ;p i dont know much about computers im more of a hands on chik so maybe if u r able to tell me how to do my intro thread that would be swell. do you just mig weld?? and whats france like??

Yes, i'm a mig production welder in a big car part factory....and France is;..errrr...wet and rainy at the mo...
We're waiting for the nice weather to arrive!
Lol, i'm a hands on chick too myself, but it never hurts to learn a bit about computers lass! It will always become useful afterwards!
