Frustration with 4stroke villiers engine

Engine off a power trowel.

I could get no life from it at all. Took it to a repair place.

When i picked it up, the chap who worked on it wasnt there, but i was assured it was running.

Bill was £16.05 ex - i cant think that covers much at all!

Anyhow, refitted it - started first pull of the rope, but sounded like a hit and miss engine as soon as any throttle was applied.

Stopped it, and now its just as it was before i took it in - no life at all.


Any ideas at all? Im supposed to be using the tool tomorrow... : /

ps.

i know nothing about petrol engines. if i turn it over holding the plug, it feels like on an electric fence, but i cant see a spark.

the wire to the 'stop' switch is hanging out the side, but that's just a ground, right? (Ie not critical) (its not touching anything either)

Does the plug get wet?

The cost of the repair would suggest something very basic like a new plug or set of points, if you lie the plug against the engines metal and give the starter a good pull you should get a clear bright spark'

Other than that it's usually a fuel issue with them, choke not on or not coming off, flooding (soaked plug), air leak at carb or no fuel (dry plug)

That loose wire is worth a looking at. Normally it would be ground out to kill the engine via a kill switch so if it's touching something it'll run like you said, on and off with the vibration.

If its points spark gap? then it may have a spark condenser like capacitor.

Sounds like carb/fuel problem , have you checked for crud in float bowl , fuel filters and emulsion tube

Just got in... Had a load of other stuff to do.

One of the chaps helping me out tomorrow is more familiar with petrol than I am, so whilst if I have a moment, I'll look at it, if I don't, I plan to point him at it.

Its damn frustrating... The place took ages to 'fix' it, right up to the deadline, and I feel if I'd only been able to talk to the chap who worked on it, I might have a clue.

To top it all, its not got a recoil started. That may have added some to my present bad mood - there's only so much rope winding I can take!

I had a nightmare sorting one out years ago. I set the timing perfectly and it ran beautifully...until you stopped it and tried to restart it, when it refused completely. The problem was that the timing was set on the flwheel, which was on a morse taper and not keyed. When the engine stopped, the flywheel ran on. The cure is to lap the flywheel to the crank taper if that is the problem...

Points or maggy going, holding the plug should give you more than just a leccy fence jolt
