french mild steel spec

well i`ve been loking into maunfacturing some wishbones for my track car for a while now...

i`ve seen a couple of companies that supply "kits" using:

25cd4s tubing and machined items....

any guide as to what a UK equivalent spec would be????? s i`ll be bu££ered if i can find it listed in uk stock lists....

most motor parts and bike frames are made of reynolds tubing give em a ring or google them

trouble is reynolds is just a brand.. i remember seeing various frames during my biking days...

501, 531, 6??, 731?????????

i`ve been advised to use 1 1/4 x 12swg CDS tubing for the arms but need to machine threaded inserts for the rose joints... but what spec solid bar do i start with??

EN8?? EN24?? 16T?? 19T??? 24T??? EN36???

It's 4130 chromoly, international equivilant chart here

Edit. EN14 is common choice. Often used with T45 tube which is also a carbon manganese alloy steel (as was Reynolds 531). 731 was the heat treated version of 531, 501 a chromoly, 631 and 853 are some air hardening alloy

CDS covers quite a bit of ground- production process rather than an alloy, more detail here, CFS3 NBK is the normal choice IIRC

It would be easier using T45 than chrome molly 4130 no need to normalise after welding. www.elmdonmetals.co.uk Phill matts will keep you right. www.mcgillmotorsports.co.uk probably the cheepest 4130 teflon insert rose joints around he can also supply the high-miss spacers and inserts if you have not got access to a lathe.

tubing will be 12swg CDS.. m/c items will be in EN1A...

T45 would be easier than 4130 - no need to preheat and heat after.

A lot of people use T45 for roll cages so I'd imagine it's pretty strong

EN1A contains lead to make it more machinable, often referred to as 'free machining steel'..........be aware that if you have to subsequently weld any parts that have been made from EN1A that the welds will almost certainly be undercut. If you do have to weld these parts then EN3 would be a better option.

I would go with you on that one! Better to check that you have not picked up on the wrong info.

I've just done some reading on EN1A as I've had some bad experiences welding it in the past. Weld pool is always dirty, and undercut and porosity are always present in the finished weld. It seems that there are two grades, EN1A (230M07) and EN1A Leaded (230M07 Pb).
