French Doors With Laminated Glass

Locksmith pal recommended we get laminated glass in whatever door we have fitted.

missus wants french doors now instead of sliding.

so locksmith said £1200 installed with laminated glass.

thought I better get a second price from a window/door guy.

he came round this morning and said don’t get laminated glass it’s way heavier and causes the doors to drop. I can do the extra thin 4mm laminated glass but it’s dearer.
He has also given a price of £1200.

Is he right or is he trying to flog me some crap doors with crap hinges?

really wanted the laminate glass for peace of mind.

Hownbigs the opening ? We had a pair of pvc French doors 900 each and they definitely dropped. They also use to open up a gap across the top in summer (ie the frame distorted i think).

Replaced now with an aluminium bifold which is perfect. That one plusba second that is about 4m across were about 4.5k installed from memory so depending on the size you need a bifold may not be that much more.

We used to fit laminated to the outside and toughened to the inside to have the best of both. At 2 meters wide they should be advising you on other options as if they open out the first gust of wind will take it off and opening inwards leaves you with dead space. It's worth spending half an hour just looking at the pro's and cons of French doors and plotting out the space they take.

In my experience they’ll sag. They’ll be a metre each.

There may be varying levels of quality but certainly the ones we had were awful.

quite comon here is for the sliding doors and also windows to go inside the cavity.......
best of both worlds.....
dosen't matter what the glass weighs........

probably thinking about people wearing stripy jumpers and face masks. the ordinary safety glass is more of an open door to them

laminated IS much heavier so probably best to only get from somebody whose doors are designed to take it as standard

plotting out the space they take

the fold out doors are really nice in the summer as they make an unobstructed view into the garden but take a look at how recessed they are in the wall, hinge design and any obstructions on the wall outside as it can be difficult to fit restraints when they cannot open right back

French doors drop... how much depends o how well they are glazed, not the type. Wedged and braced properly it should be minimal and will probably want adjusting the year after they are fitted .

Laminate outside and toughened inside is ideal if you have a high scrote population otherwise it's just adding weight
