Freelander 2005 diesel clutch

Any one ever done a clutch on one of these? heard its a horrible job but you know how it is trying to help friends out!

We ran them for a few years, found the easiest way was on a two post lift. Chock/wedge/prop the engine/box on a pallet and then lift the car up. its not a long or complicated job. You can leave the engine in and remove the transfer box first then the gearbox but that is a faff.

Done a couple, both on 2 posts and just took the ird (transfer box) off and then the gearbox off on a transmission jack. 8hrs book time I think.

Had a quick look and think i might run away, I dont have a 2 poster yet so it would be ramps and axle stands outside
If I do get roped in will the IRD come out without taking the crossmember off?

You can leave the transfer box in place but that leaves you the clutch splines, the engine dowels, the driveshaft splines, seals, and the register on the transfer box to line up all at the same time. May get away with it if you had a mucker to help,its not a bad job if you have been in there before. The concealed bolts holding the top of the transfer box to the gearbox are probably the biggest challenge, I always remove the turbo and downpipe to give a bit more space.

Iirc you have to take the subframe off and support the engine from above. It's been a while though since I did one.

I've done it twice single handed and lying on gravel so it can be done! I'd remove the IRD, access to the bolts otherwise is going to be very difficult and the IRD isn't that much work or weight to remove. If it's the subframe you are referring to as a cross member then it does have to come out I'm afraid but it's probably ready for a clean up and repaint by now anyway.

Congratulations the job is yours! decided to shy away from it at present as she seems to think her 2 boys are going to do it which suits me fine, at least i have a better idea if it rears its head again so thanks for everyones input
