Decided to take the caravan away for a few days just down the coast. Whilst away the tailgate lock on the Freelander packed up & as it's tied in with the whole locking system non of the doors would lock. Fortunately I hadn't strayed to far & was able to return home to check out the problem.
On disassembly locks mechanicals found to be Ok but a gear shaft in the locks actuator had snapped. Imagine my delight when I found somebody selling the replacement part on the bay. New part ordered for the princely sum of £8.99 & able to Jerry rig the tailgate lock to complete the mini break.
On my return new part waiting but that was the easy bit, getting the actuator apart was complicated by having undo numerous barbed tabs that were ready to snap off if you looked at them the wrong way. Perseverance paid off & on reassembly the lock functioned perfectly again.
The price of a new lock is over £75 so well worth the effort involved. Apparently this lock is fitted to Land rovers, Volvo Vauxhall & a host of other cars.
