Found These In Old Reclaiming Unit

I was out yesterday wandering about killing time while my car was in for an mot and came across a reclaiming company with a huge unit full of stuff. So naturally I had to have a rumage to see what I could find and I came across these nice machines. I know the first one is a nice Viceroy wood lathe and 2 Viceroy sanders but I dont know what the other one was. It says Wadkin on it and it kind of resembles a milling machine. Anyone shed some light on it and also any idea what these would be worth ?

The last one is a motice machine. It has a hollow square chisel with an auger style drill bit running through the centre.

Value? No idea!

The Wadkin is an industrial wood morticing machine, highly prized by wood working folk, also fetch good money (fleabay is your friend here)

It's the Wadkin Bursgreen, the "Rolls Royce of morticers" according to ebay seller ollymick. Wadkin are proper industrial machines we used to use a crosscut saw.

Yeah nice morticer ..we had one similar that in a place I worked years ago ,a joy to use... any cuting tools with it ? The one we had ,had a little cupboard in the base with a load of diferent size hollow chisel auger thingies and a chuck with a morse taper so the machine could be used as a drill press very handy bit of kit ....jeff...

viceroy Bowl turning head, if you get it, look for the face plates, Viceroy belt/disc sander. and as said Hollow square chisel mortice machine both reputable manufacturers, excellent machines, just need to find the person who wants them.

I`ll see if I can find any specs.

Our morticer didnt have an MT in the spindle but you could nevertheless insert a parallel adapter with a chuck on it and lock it in with the grub screw.

There's one of those mortisers at school, it's a very nice machine to use. I like the idea of putting a drill chuck on it.
The Viceroy lathe is cool too.

The hollow chisels themselves arn't cheap, I have a generic sliding table morticer and as an example a 20mm Japanese pattern chisel set is £100!

Why are the Japanese pattern chisels so expensive is it the design or quality of the steel?

I have some El Cheapo chisels, are the Japanese chisels really worth the extra cost?

You can choose a selection of Mortice chisel sets , 4 in the set from just over £20.00 set up correctly and not abused will give you good service, Second hane Marples wont be much dearer.The biggest problem with the Machines is they are built for professional use, and will probably be 3 phase/415V.
There are Chinease Mortice chisel sets - are they Hollow square to fit this type of machine?? seems extortionate expensive.

I have used cheap chisels and the expensive Japanese pattern chisels and unfortunately it's like most things in life, you need to pay more for quality!
The Japenese pattern chisels take less effort to sink into the timber, clear the chips a lot faster without clogging up and overheating and stay sharp for a lot longer.
The cheap chisels are ok on softwood but for deep mortices in seasoned hardwood like Oak and Iroko they are hopeless being painfully slow and prone to overheating and burning the tips.
I think the wall of the Japanese pattern chisels is thinner as is the body of the auger, requiring a higher grade of steel to maintain the strength.

Wow do I like the look of those, very similar to some old Dominion stuff I have, taper ground, thin wall. As you wil be well aware of, but for anybody else---try sinking a long reach Sq. chisel to its full depth in one go and then try and pull it back out.!! You`ll appreciate the difference Quality can make.

Iroko-- Do you like the smell!!!!!!!!!!!

Bowl lathe, for woodturning, morticer, and a belt/disc sander by the looks of it.
All a little bit big for the average hobbyist.

The lathe would be nice...probably somewhere around the £500 mark i'd guess...perhaps more if it had a few bowl rests with it...

Sanders, probably worth £200-250...
Morticer, proper heavy duty machine that!

If you look closely, that vice thing can be unbolted and repositioned closer to the back fence for thinner work.

I prefer the smell of Iroko to freshly sawn Ash, I always think it smells like cat ****.

One of my all time favorite woods, bit dusty --ASH, used to do all the Body shops many years ago for their shops all over the country, outstanding shopfronts and internal fittings, then they go and spoil them with a green stain.!!
Heres a nice ash reception counter,It was in the front Office of Royal Mail in Orchard Street,Newcastle--sadly that is long gone and I believe the counter hit the skip. Iroko gets the back of my throat and starts a cough off.

Very nice Stan.

I did a load of lipstick displays, amongst others, for Virgin Cosmetics. Outrageously fiddly, so eventually they found another way. I have no idea how, since I had already been down the known routes before.

Also, not as attractive as that front desk.

Nah never took any of them home I've not got the space to have them and I dont really do any wood work so no use to me. I am going back in the next few days for other things so I will find out how much they would want for them just out of curiosity and let yous know. Thanks for the info anyway guys.
