Are these weldable?

Not to repair them but to mount them onto a bracket in a fixed format.

I saw a set on a rental forklift the other day that had been cut and welded about 6" from the end.

I've seen anvils made from pieces of forklift tines welded together so thet can be welded. I know someone on here posted what grade of steel they are and the correct rods to use in a thread about anvils but I can't remember what thread it was in

It’s still a low alloy steel though pre and postheat will be the order of the day

I only have MIG.

Back plates tend to be held on by brackets & clips.

I might have sourced a cheap set with back plate so will neatly bypass the problem as back plates are easy weldable.

I might have sourced a cheap set with back plate so will neatly bypass the problem as back plates are easy weldable.

Mounting brackets are welded on on both my 8 ton lift forklifts!

I Believe the material is EN 8. Welding to them will fail the Loler Puwer inspection though.

Definitely in the strain area, ie anything not factory

In that case how come the one I saw the other day which was on hire had had the tines cut and welded?

As an inspector I'd be jubious of any repairs or welding and would want to see a load test before signing of on any modification including shortening. I'd assume in @Wozzaaah case they will have been tested and recertified before sending out on hire?

6" from the end isn't a high strain area. I don;t think I'd like to see them welded further back.

as per @DanZac advise, unless they come with some sort of certification post weld.......immediate defect, which is notifiable to the HSE. Any evidence of a HAZ on a fork tine would have my spider senses tingling......I failed a few in my past job
Farmers were regular victims......gas axing holes in the end of tines to prevent 1 tonne bags slipping off was a regular thing.
