Nothing wrong with a tractor forklift if you have the space, they are a bit cumbersome. Dumper based forklifts come up cheap and are worth looking at as alternative.

I bought a Hyster that looks exactly the same as @8ob one except mine has a perkins.
You do have to be careful as many of these things a have had a bit of life. I paid £600 for mine and it cost £140 to get it home. Amazingly even though it's 1973 every part I've needed was available. I've put a bit of money into it and I'm just debating putting some new pnuematic tyres because it struggles in my yard when it's wet and my local forklift place said pneumatics will be slightly better on rough stuff as they give a bit. I would have prefered an auto/shuttle box but for what I need it for manual is fine. It's amazing what it will lift even on tickover.
It had a stuck clutch when I bought and I've had the engine/gearbox separated twice now, still got a few bits to sort but it's getting there.
I could manage without one as I have a tractor with a loader but being able to spin in a 7" circle makes a big difference and it's a cool toy to have.

@8ob what's the guage on the far right of yours? Mine is missing, I guess it's and hour meter or something. I'm also pleased to see the dash is made as standard with the hole for a side shift lever as I assumed mine had it removed.
I've got 3 gauges on the left as one is a fuel level gauge which you don't have because it's gas

If you've got a tractor available with a front-end loader then it seems a little bit of a no-brainer unless it gets very tight. Depends on how high you want to go but a 3-point linkage may be enough.
I bought a 2CX a few months back and then picked up a pair of forks off @vwmark and a few hours in the tinkering shed (OK more like 6) and I had the following bodged together. Most of the time was spent gouging out the holes for the top and bottom "pins" as I didn't have a big enough drill bit and 20mm steel was pushing it for my plasma.
They've proven absolutely invaluable, so glad I made it conform to the quick hitch. Spent yesterday continually swapping between the forks and the bucket shifting things around prepping for the new slab for the workshop.
* Not certified in anyway but did a load test with the bag and it was fine...

To add to my post above - the one problem you may find with a front-end loader variant is that visibility on them might not be the best. I've found that the socking great big piece of box section (~12x9") that ties the two arms together on the JCB is right in the line of sight of where the forks are and also where the top of the quick-hitch bracket is. It means when I'm trying to hitch up an implement I'm typically in 1st gear crawling at idle, stood up in the cab with my foot on the brake so I can see what's going on.
Practice makes perfect but I have considered chucking a mirror (inevitably I'll knock it off on trees) or a camera on the top of the cab so that I can see what's going on more easily.
