Ford rocker covers, how to remove HT lead clips?

i have a 2.9i that I am tittivating and want to paint the rocker covers. However, I can't get the plastic clips to come off. Is there a technique or do they have to be broken off?

2 types...

Type 1 is a ball type affair on the bottom of the clip, you just carefully lever the clip out of the hole
Type 2 is a slide in clip. There are pegs on the bottom of the clip in keyhole slots in the rocker cover. Its most likely this one from memory..
