Ford Kuga awd gearbox problem

Mates Dad having trouble with his Kuga gearbox. 2017 diesel manual box.
Jumping out of 2nd gear. Intermittent fault. Doesn't do it if you hold the gear lever. No nasty noises or crunches. Garage said synchronmesh and needs a recon box but I think more linkage related.
Any ideas anyone?

More likely a linkage issue than a synchromesh problem. Do the linkage cables (presumably they are cables) have any adjustment on the Kuga?

Provided it feels like it's going into gear correctly, then it'll likely be an internal problem.

Jumping out underload, or during over run is usually a sign the drive dogs are worn.

Usually caused by being driven with a hand continually on the gear selector - keeps the pressure on the forks until the 'dogs' eventually wear enough so there is room for the gears to force a disengage under load.

As it's only second I would try the detent or linkage
