They must have used metal gears in something in Cologne built engines as a nice engineer at Dagenham "obtained"
one from Germany for me to put in an engine I had bought to fit in my Landy.

Eureka!
Finally sussed the reason for the problem. The fuel pressure was indeed excessive at 6-7 Bar and nothing I did changed that. So I sat and thought for a bit and bounced a few thoughts off a friend. Then I did some thinking about how the pressure regulator works and decided that with a given input pressure, it can't possibly regulate. What it actually does is bleed off fuel by increasing the return flow, therefore the pressure in the fuel rail drops.
I proved the point by disconnecting the return line and feeding it into a catch tank. Lots of flow and pressure down to 2 Bar! OK so we are getting somewhere now... I followed the return line all the way back to the tank and it was all clear. I then put a drill bit into the return spigot on the tank.
When this tank was made for me a few years ago, the fabricator welded on the return boss but never drilled it through!
Pressure now a little lower than spec at 2 rather than 2.5 Bar but I think it will do. Engine still a bit rough, so another issue to explore later. CO down to 1.6% now which I think is about right.

You may well find the engine oil is now diluted with petrol,just changing the oil and filter may well make the engine run too lean
