We're certainly rather beyond capacity in busy-ness, as are pretty much all out suppliers.

Thats because we have nothing much left to turn anything out with.

Hmm . . several million quid of investment in our own machine shop might argue against that. Still send out millions of sub-contract work.

We're just rather good at what we do - so Brexit or not, customers come from around the world to us - there still is high regard for British engineering all around the world, from sometimes from the last place you'd expect!

I agree with all of the above but if you look back to even 20 years ago, the manufacturing facilities and capabilities the uk has are now very limited.

Seems to me [but what do I know ] that much of what is described as "Made in the UK" could be more accurately described as "Assembled in the UK"

I would love to know the accurate facts and figures and maybe if we have a accountant on the forum they could pitch in but as i see it.
When a company first registers for vat the have to declare a category ie Manufacturing,now as far as i an aware there is no process to alter or redefine this category.
Now i know many long standing manufacturing companies who to all intensive purposes are now more of less importers and distributors.
But if unchanged there turnover and profit figures will still be calculated into the official figures for uk manufacturing totals.
I may be totally wrong and misinformed, but if correct this would explain the difference in how manufacturing is seen/officially promoted compared to the real world that i see.

We used to refer to an Accountant as being "The person brought onto the field of battle, not to count the dead but to bayonet the wounded".....
Clearly, no offence intended to any Accountant member masquerading as a real person.......Oops!! And I'll say it now, I trained and qualified as a Banker.
Our internal auditors used to arrive unannounced [in a big office it was like a football team turning up ] - our definition of insincerity was "I'm from Head Office and I'm here to help you"
