Little project my father has been working on for about 6 weeks so far.

Vintage style rocking horse for my 5 year old. Bit more finishing to be done, final sanding, sealing, mane, saddle, tail and stirrups and paint, then lower rails and irons.

Made from ash and poplar and is the reason I had to repair the driveshaft housing on his thicknesser

Should be finished in around 2 weeks. As it sits, it weights 4 stone

my advice is cut lower and add a solid saddle ( hardwood ) as its always the wear point of rocking horses

that rear plug will get to where it hurts when they ride it even with a saddle fitted

There are kits out there cut from plywood that you laminate and sand/carve to finish. Would like to try one but they are expensive.

cheaper to buy the wood and components (marginally)...think the timber cost in the region of £280, the irons, mane and saddle cost somewhere around 200

yes, he has followed tradition and kept the centre hollow and filled it with something that inspired the build. my daughter has named it after a character from a show she watches, so he has got a doll of that character that is now encased inside with a note explaining it.

I have made a few rocking horses in my 20s for kids in the family my dad always found it amusing when I made rocking horse poop from left overs

the old style was with a rocking horse and 2 seats one either side but they was big



i will give you this site for you though

rocking horse can be dangerous the forward and back motion can tip over as they can pass top dead center easily, so depends on what method you choose however there is the swing type
