The inserts are great value - I just object to spending over £50 on something German. Especially as we have now left the EU.So you just need some of those ones I linked, then I would definitely buy inserts from DO Tool again. Does exactly what it says on the tin, and great value, too.
I love my vcmt16 tools - try it with a polished vcgt16 insert on aluminum or brass and it will cut the full edge length. I cant use much of the edge with my lathe on steel. There are still some 25/32/40mm shank holders/ boring bars for these on amazon btw.I've posted to my thread but thought I'd mention here too...
I got a new toy tonight... SVHCR and some VCMT16 inserts from ebay

So, bear in mind this is gummy black bar, maybe EN1, maybe ungraded. This was a 0.5mm DOC, 25mm dia, 1000rpm, 5 TPR feed.
It's almost flawless! Again, pictures pick up more than the naked eye does, it's almost mirror finish. If it was a better steel, I think it would be flawless.. but then again, better steels give better finishes anyway.

I like this tool and these inserts very, very much. I only wish I'd got it with a 25mm or 30mm shank.
Added bonus: if you're lazy you can get a badly angled chamfer on one side shoulder by using the far edge, and run the lathe in reverse to chamfer the other side shoulder... ask me if I tried well it takes the sharp edge off anyway!
Downsides: It doesn't like deep cuts. I pushed it with a 3mm DOC and was rewarded with a hot stringy mess. It also doesn't like higher than 5 TPR feed. So no good for roughing. It literally likes 3-5 TPR and 0.5-1.5mm DOC. This is more or less exactly within the parameters written on the insert box. It doesn't mind going slower, too.

For the price it is ok but it doesn't have a shim.Ahh think I have found the solution

I fancied taking a chance I think I'd read somewhere of someone else being happy with DO tool inserts first.I still need to get some inserts for steel. I saw those carbide direct listings but was put off by the bs in the description.

If an insert breaks the carbide will often take a nice slice out of a tool with no shim. With a shim you may get a cracked shim but the tool will almost certainly be undamaged.Excuse my ignorance but what purpose does the shim have? Apart from raising the height of course!

Well I have just ordered a pack of the inserts - and a British toolholder for them.So you just need some of those ones I linked, then I would definitely buy inserts from DO Tool again. Does exactly what it says on the tin, and great value, too.
Might have been me...I've been using them for some time and have no complaints. Their no brand ones seem better than generic Chinese and they also sell some branded ones at good price.I fancied taking a chance I think I'd read somewhere of someone else being happy with DO tool inserts first.
Well I bought some of the tools Kram posted a link to and the bits you mentioned. I also bought the British tool which came with a VCMT16 insert but a nice shiny one.I've posted to my thread but thought I'd mention here too...

Yes lathe is pretty big - Colchester Triumph. The toolpost makes a Dickson S2 look tinyEither that is a short tool or your lathe is massive!
That looks like a non ferrous tip and will do amazing things on aluminium, brass and delrin.
It wont last long on steel for anything more than light tickles.
Ive ordered some YBC251's which should be here next week.
I need to play around more with the other tips and maybe try them in this holder to get a fair comparison. What depth of cut and feed are you at? The inserts I got still liked at least 0.5mm/20thou (that is, 1mm/40 thou off the diameter) and 5 thou per rev. You could do less, but the finish suffered. Also, what's your centre height like with those shims? Is it close, or is it actually correct?
