foot operated switch

this has nothing to do with welding whatso ever.
im building a car and i want to put the main headlamp beams onto a switch that i can press with my left foot.my problem is i can only seem to find momentary switches but i need a latching switch.so i thought id ask on here as this place gets a pretty varied selection of folk viewing it so i figured someone would be able to point me in the direction of a car or a tractor or something that might have the switch that i am looking for.

How about an old fashioned foot operated dipswitch, like this one

i saw those but thought they were only for flashing and not a latch switch.how does it do both the lights? what were they originally fitted on?

Landrovers upto Series IIa have foot operated dipswitches. Search for Paddocks, Craddocks also Vehicle Wiring Products may stock them.

There are 3 terminals

Input from light switch
Output to both main beams
Output to both dip beams

Operating the switch alternates between main & dip.

damn i spent ages putting the dip on a seperate switch.do you think it would work if i only wired up the main beam part?

That would only switch the main beam on & off.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. It sounds like you're running the risk of having both beams on at the same time.

They were fitted to most 60s austin / morris etc, minors, minis, 1100s, all had them, I used one once to switch the Cibies, on my 1600e, just use the feed and one of the outputs, it'll work as an on / off switch

ive got seperate bulbs for the dipped so wasn't really that fussed if both the lights were on at the same time.the lights are crap at the best of times so the thought of extra brightness was a bonus.

Gaz, do a google for NF Autos aka Car Builder Solutions I'm pretty sure they do the pedal type dip switch. Alternatively Demon Tweeks may have something in their motorsport section.

As I understand it this would allow you to switch between dipped and main beam only so you may still need a stalk to allow you to flash your headlights (which I think is part of the SVA test or whatever they've replaced that with). That said I may well be wrong...

My 1967 MGBGT had a foot operated dip switch. As has already been said, a lot of cars of that era had them.
