I've used a couple of folders, not sure about that one though.
I've used an older one which was quite heavy and a modern one both folded in a way where you clamp the metal down by square sized weights, with a weight plate that comes up and you can bend to 90 degrees and so forth by how far you manually push the plate back but only folded up to 2mm sheet metal.
Be very careful of fingers though, caught my thumb in the plate once, 18 stitches later...

I thought a folder and a press brake were two different things. Thats a press brake, hows it powered?

Would be interested to see the back of that wonder if there is a gear set up driven off that 1" square maybe with a crank handle.

What's the difference between a folder and a press brake?
I am looking to fold 1.5mm aluminium 2 foot 6 square and smaller plus various sizes of tin/mild steel to make up.boxes...
It helps when your specific. !
You need ( preferably) a box & pan folder if you want to fold boxes, however you can bodge it by using spacer insert bars in the gap equal to (or a bit taller) the height of the previous 2 bends.

Have a look at box and pan folders, they have removable fingers so you adjust to suit the dimension's of your box sides. With a standard folder you can only fold two sided to create a U profile.

That looks like it might be an old upstroker, a cam operated by the handle pushes the bottom beam upwards, sheer hard work to use and pretty limited in what you can do with it, it would probably cost more to shift it than its worth,
A 4' box and pan folder would be much more useful

Yep, you want a box pan folder like mine. You adjust the fingers (which clamp the piece down) to enable you to do multiple folds.

Cheap folders aren't much chop compared to older machines and it's only 600mm wide.
There's two 600Gabro folders on eBay at the moment and open to offers. You will sell it any time for at least what you paid for it if you get something like a Gabro or an old British model.
Stakseys has a box and pan for about £750 which is probably okay for general use but it's the jaws that are normally not up to it with the cheapo models.

We have a folder just like MattH's, made by Edwardes, same company that made the brake press in the top picture. We make big water tanks for narrowboats in 1.5mm stainless steel, and it handles it easily. I imagine that brake press is geared, because looking at the size of the frame, they must have been expecting it to bend some srious lumps of steel! It might also be possible to put a pulley and belt on the end of it and hook it to a motor. I would think it would be good for doing things like folding flat bar and other small shapes in heavy steel. No contest for folding boxes though, the box and pan folder takes it every time.
