Fobco bench drill

i have a fobco a bench drill that I have recently been been restoring and I wondered where is the best place and best type of motor (240v) to get
Also it would need to be able to fit the original pulley

Obviously not tooo expensive

I got a used one off Ebay for my Progress. Paid £50 for it, but it was right power, voltage, mounting and shaft diameter and not too far away to collect.

I think you'll have difficulty finding a new motor with an imperial shaft

Someome with the same drill could confirm but you probably need a 4 pole (1425rpm) 0.5hp motor, the chances are the shaft will match the original if you get a used one.

If you were thinking of a new one, why not keep the original and get a VFD?

Yep Newton Tesla quoted me for a Imperial B56 frame motor with a 5/8"inch drive shaft for my FOBCO Star. Theres another firm on eBay who I enquired with too I cant for the life of me find the email thread! They said pick your motor and we will turn down the shaft for £10.

They do single phase and 3 phase. look on their website under single phase motors www.newton-tesla.co.uk I think they are about £140.00 plus vat

You could get an inverter and use the original motor for that much!

I went into a motor factors with the old motor off my progress 2g (which looks very like the fobco), the old boy at the counter glanced at, disappeared into the stores without uttering a word, and came back with the exact motor i needed. He never took a measurement, read the tag, nothing. It fitted straight on and worked perfectly.

You could get an inverter and use the original motor for that much!

His original motor is probably 440 volts only so you would need someone to alter the motor to 440/220v for free if you don't know how to do it yourself, then you can use an inverter.

Edit: I don't want to sound argumentative, like Ive got an answer for everyrhing. I've got an inverter on one drill and not on the other, electric speed and direction control is just nothing to sniff at, I only use the other drill when the 3 phase one is too small.

Doesn’t matter the pully is too big for the shaft so back to square one

The motor is 14mm shaft

And the pulley is 15.8mm or 5/8”

But the motor shaft isn’t long enough either. The only idea I had was to make a sleeve for the shaft and the pully would need boring out but I don’t have a lathe
