Fly Press for bending

morning all.

have just been out on a job on a farm, and came across and old fly press.

the owner doesn't know anything about it except it hasn't been used since his father dies around 15 years ago. he told me I could have it if I could shift it.

it needs a bit of a clean up but it still works as it should.

providing I make the right tooling is a fly press suitable for making clean crisp bends in up to around 2mm mild and stainless sheet?

The only problem i can see in using a fly press for this is that there is not much depth from the 'ram' to the 'column' so you couldn't fold deep sections

But free is a very good word!

excellent. that is pretty much the depth of what I would be bending. nothing huge just edges and things like induction boxes for bikes.

and yes, free is a very good word. its gonna be a pig to move though. measurement say it should fit in the van quite easily, but lifting it may be a bit tricky. may have to employ a tractor to help

If you can have it free, it's worth having regardless, if you have room for it. It definitely will come in handy for something someday.

its in the back of the van at the moment. I fear I have ben a bit daft. I went to pick it up and the old guy had been a star and cleared everything away from in front of it, and dragged it out with the tractor ready to lift. lifted it on chains with the tractor bucket and got it in the van...now, the van is parked outside the house, I only have access to the garden by coming in through the front door and walking through the house, and I have no way of getting this heavy lump of metal out of my van without breaking either it, the van or my feet...

and I don't think it will fit through my door...may end up taking a fence panel down to get it in the garden, just gotta figure out how to get it off the van

A good way to get things out of vans on your own is an old empty tyre with a piece of ply on top of it. you can drop things onto the ply wood and because of the air pressure it forms in the tyre it takes the shock out of the fall and lowers the item to the ground without breaking them, you can off load full 200ltr barrels like this with out the ply wood just drop the barrel into the empty tyre lying flat and it doesnt even dent the drum !
you just get a big whoosh of air and the barrel just lowers to the floor.

Ditto that. Worked every time for me with barrels. I'd not do it with the fly press though.

Think you're gonna need a hand with it. I got mine out of the truck with an engine crane. It's still sat on a skate till I figure how to get it into the shed that I've not yet built

I think I might phone a few mates and see if they have an engine crane.

it can stay in the van tonight, its not going anywhere.

if all else fails I will use the tyre and ply method cheers for the advice

then you have to work out how to get it on the bench
It took four of us to get mine into my shed - no room for the engine hoist

Get a kids skate board, takes a surprising amount of weight over the axles

What number Flypress is it? Usually cast into the side. Gives us an idea of the size.
