Flux lifting

I have been welding a while and this is the 1st time i've seen this, is it good or bad ???

Rods: 3.2mm 6013
Machine: 17 year old, Hiarc 220 amp arc welder
Amps: 120 amps
Material: 10mm plate notched 45 degrees

Also I am getting alot of splatter, the rod is practally touching the work piece when i'm welding.

Any way of reducing splatter ???

It's called a peeler and generally good - at least I feel chuffed when I get one!

It usually happens when the plate is cold and when its thick compared to the size of rod. Different rods produce different amounts of spatter, however, as a rule of thumb the more spatter the better the penetration. Its a compromise, you can try turning down the current and try touching the workpiece with the rod.

I`m really chuffed when it does that, means its not porous (or so I`m told).

Ive never thought about it not being porous. Really it doesnt mean it cant be porous but I guess its a good rule of thumb.
Im trying to think if I have ever seen a peeler over a porous weld and I think I have but only on development rods

it means your getting good at welding well done

Nice Peeler! Allways kind of satisfing when the slag lifts..... and when you can get it to happen with overhead fillets, then you know you've cracked it
