flueless woodburners: is there such a thing?

Hi,

Might seem like an odd and possibly very stupid question, but I know some of you are quite knowledgable about woodburners so I thought I'd ask here.

Is there such a thing as a flueless solid fuel burner? Is it possible to build one and how would one go about such a thing? Surely there must be a way to filter out all the nasties from the exhaust to make it safe to run indoors without a chimney?

I'd love to build a little device that can burn wood or briquettes indoors without having to use a chimney, as having a chimney liner installed is prohibitably expensive.

I recall reading of a catalytic woodburner made by Morsø; you`d surely still require a chimney though.

Never understood how burying/capturing CO2 is called carbon capture, when the vast majority of what you're capturing is Oxygen.

surely a flexible stainless steel chimney liner is not prohibitively expensive, especially if you can put it in yourself?

I put a multi fuel burner in my bungalow last year, i havent got a chimney so i used twin wall pipe, its designed for this purpose comes in various lengths with male and female ends that twist lock together with a external band (like a jubilee clip) its cool to the touch. comes in stainless or galvanised its expensive around
100 quid a meter, purchased mine s/hand from ebay,

Naughtily I made my own isolated chimney stack a bit back, from some single wall tubes I had, and a stainless flexy inner liner, with fire rockwall between the two.
Its a pig of a job to assemble, and you have to raise the chimney stack in one piece as theres no way your going to wedge all that isolation up in one go, so I ratchet strapped it a ladder with various ties to support it and winched it into place. I tig'd the sections together while it was layed out on the ground too because I thought the bandclamps holding the bits together looked poxy...
When the wood burner is running at full chat and has its back boiler at 100+ degC, you can touch the chimney outer layer still. Total cost was about £250 all in for the materials for the stack including a proper stainless hat. Its 7m tall too...

As everyone points out, if you somehow found a way to filter the particulates from the chimney, it'd still use all the oxygen up in the room and asphyxiate you as a result.

All that said, Butane cabinet heaters put fumes into the room and take up oxygen.

And theyve been responsible for death by carbon monoxide poisening quite a few times in the past too.

Hello Dave,

there is a big difference in cost between twin wall and flexible duct, which is all that's needed to line an existing chimney. Actually you only need twin wall where you pass through ceilings or roofs and solid cast iron is often used within a room.
